What you’re looking at
This page combines a railroad advertisement with political satire typical of early 20th-century Life magazine. **Main Content:** The left side advertises the "20th Century Limited" train service between New York, Boston, and Chicago, emphasizing speed and business efficiency. The illustration shows a streamlined locomotive symbolizing modern progress. **The Satire:** The right column mocks President Taft's 1909 executive order allowing Roman Catholic teachers in Indian schools to wear religious garb. Life suggests this should be *mandatory* for all religions, proposing ridiculous "uniforms": Methodists wearing "kill-joy expressions," Mormons displaying "wedding rings on all fingers," Baptists in "bathing suits," and notably, barring Unitarians and Agnostics from teaching entirely. The satire's point: it exposes the absurdity of mandating religious dress in public schools and the hypocrisy of claiming religious "equality" while actually privileging certain faiths. By pushing Taft's moderate accommodation to extremes, Life critiques both the original order and broader tensions over religion in American public institutions.

It should not only be permis- sive, but compulsory. The War Department might prescribe the uniforms in a general order of the usual kind, providing that Roman Cath- olic nuns, monks and priests shall, when on duty as teachers, wear the garb of their respective orders. Episcopalians, the high waistcoat, white chokers and shovel hat, in the case of men, and a-deaconess's frock, in the case of women. Methodists will wear the -ustomacy kill-joy expression. Presbyterians will wear tlane-cors:va ties, symbolical of perpetual hell-frc. Mormons will wear wedding rings on all the fingers of both hands. No uniform is prescribed for Unita- rians and Agnostics, as they will not be permitted to teach at all, no matter what they wear or don't wear. siz Scientists shall wear promi- nently displayed a receipted bill for ai least three copies of Mrs. Eddy’s “ Sci- ence and Health; with a Key to the Scriptures.” Hebrews will not be required to wear any distinguishing uniform. Baptists, male and female, will wear bathing suits.
