What you’re looking at
This is satirical commentary on the "Turkey Trot" and similar ragtime dances that scandalized 1910s America. Life mocks the dances' critics by pretending to establish a "Fashion Reform League" dancing school. The satire works through irony: the article claims these dances promote "art and grace and beauty" while naming real prominent figures—Mayor Gaynor, John Wanamaker, Dr. Parkhurst, and Supreme Court justices—as enthusiasts, implying even respectable leaders have embraced the controversial trend. The joke deepens by claiming Anthony Comstock (a real anti-vice crusader) now teaches the "Grizzly Bear." Comstock famously opposed such "immoral" dances, so attributing his endorsement is absurdly funny. The cartoon caption mockingly warns a girl named Mary against "naughty American dances," reinforcing that these dances were considered sexually improper and scandalous by conservative society. Life ridicules moral panic over modern dancing by treating it as inevitable and elite-approved.

“IESE Do You Turkey Trot? If Not, Apply Immediately to Life's Fashion Reform League—Nothing Omitted to Put Dancing on Right Plane E have just made an addition to our plant in Lire Park (for- merly Central), and are pleased to announce that we have opened an ex- tensive school for dancing. We call especial attention to our “Turkey Trot,” “Bunny Hug” and “Grizzly Bear” departments; and in order that we may anticipate criticism we desire to state that these depart- ments, we believe, will do more to place our prominent men on a really artistic basis than anything else. It is gradually becoming recognized in this country that the pursuit of money for itself alone is scarcely worth while. It is also being discov- ered that there has been a lot of false dignity about our public officials. Art and grace and beauty are the only essentials. We make a business of teaching these three branches, and we are happy to state that the class of clients who have already to us indicates that the American people are taking up the idea in the right spirit. Among others who have ‘recently taken up the “ Turkey Trot” we may mention Mayor Gaynor, John Wana- maker, Dr. Parkhurst and several members of the Supreme Court, whose names are temporarily withheld owing to the lingering diffidence which we expect to dispel short, It is also very gratifying for us to be able to make the announcement that we have engaged Mr. Anthony Comstock, who will take charge of this department. Mr. Comstock has been practicing under our system now for several months, and as an exponent of the “Grizzly Bear,” has no equal in this country. He will give lessons every morning from ten to twelve to clubs of a dozen or more. In case you desire private lessons, you can make a special appointment with Mr. Comstock. We trust that the example thus shown by some of our most prominent men will encourage all the mothers of America to send their daughters to us. Every girl in the country, between come the ages of fifteen and twenty-five, is now learning the “Grizzly Bear,” the “Turkey Trot” and the “Bunny Hug,” or already knows them; and in view of these facts, it is very much better that they should be taught in the right school. We take classes of young girls at almost any hour of the day or night. No mother will be admitted except under special condi- tions, and if she makes any protest she will thereafter be debarred from witnessing the ceremonies. Our dancing establishment, however, will not stop at these primitive dances. Our experts have already gone over the situation, and we expect to evol new movements constantly, and after trying them out will produce them for the benefit of our clients. Among some of our latest novelties may be mentioned the “Kangaroo Clasp,” the “Alligator Curve,” the 477 “Monkey Lea the “Cleopatra Twist” and the “ Serpent Slide.” We have already sent some of our trained experts to the ends of the world in order to study conditions elsewhere, and we shall remodel some of these dances to fit our modern con- ditions, We have a special Snake Depart- ment in which all kinds of evolution will be taught, and we recommend that mothers send their daughters to us as early as possible—say, from seven years up—the earlier they start the better it is. Parents who may have some timidity about placing their children in our care need have no fear, as we practically control all the Aldermen and the Police Department. People of this sort can have no possible conception of the highest forms of art, and inasmuch as they are interested only in the finan- cial end, we have thought jt best to arrange details with them in order that our customers may be perfectly easy in their minds. Some of our new dancing costumes are now on exhibition. We have just ys You ARE TO BE HOME J AND SEE THAT YOU T TRY ANY OF THOSE NAWSTY AMERICAN DANCES! comicbooks.com
