What you’re looking at

This is primarily a **subscription advertisement** for Life magazine, not political satire. The page announces upcoming issues: a Midnight Number (Oct. 28), Thanksgiving Number (Nov. 4), and Spooks Number (Nov. 11). The title "The Great White Way" refers to Broadway's theater district, known for its bright lights. The four caricatured faces flanking the text appear to be **illustrative character types** rather than specific political figures—they're stylized heads of different ethnicities and types typical of early 20th-century magazine art. The main content is the subscription pitch: "Be cheerful for a year. It will cost you only $5.00," encouraging readers to subscribe to Life Publishing Company at their New York address.

ISSUE OF LIFE WILL BE OUT NEXT WEEK ae It is wicked, it is witty, as the title page implies; but you’d much misjudge this ditty if you didn’t think it wise. It is brilliantly improper and inordinately gay. By the chorus girl and copper it is bounded in its sway. It is gilded, it is golden, it is frothy, it ts light; but the moral of it’s olden, and the lesson of it, Right! COMING Oct. 28.—Midnight Number. We are keeping itdark for the present. It not only contains every- thing you need to know about midnight, but (possibly) some things that you don’t need to know. It’s motto is, however: ‘All’s well that ends well.” Nov. 4.—Thanksgiving Number. Cover by Flagg. This is a high kicking number. We were going to say that it is, or will be, full of good things, but we shall refrain. (See obituary of other phrases in this page.) You'll be thankful when you see it—and cheerful. Nov. I.—Sh—Spooks Number. The most wonderful, all around collection of live and up to date spooks that you ever dreamed of. Every kind of spook is there. We can’t say more e’re shivering too much already, and we are going to retire immediately to our igloo. OBITUARY (By one of out Sebscribers.} OU cannot afford to miss it" Has finally passed away. But we all know That we liked it so And the thought is with us for aye. And “It will pay you to see it” To an early death has gone So LIFE inquires Of faithful buyers That a new paraphrase be born. There's “ You'll be sorry if you don’t,” Then ‘* Look alive for LIFE™ And to all cults “* Obey that impulse,” Which have all been interred in strife. Beg, borrow, or steal, but read it; Rather we'd buy it, of course. Why need a phrase ? Its light is a blaze; Without it LIFE would be a loss. Obey That Impulse Be cheerful for a year. It will cost you only $5.00. LIFE PUBLISHING COMPANY 17 West 31st Street, - : New York comicbooks.com
