What you’re looking at

This page contains two distinct elements: **Main Story (Left Column):** A serialized romantic narrative about a young socialist writer named Jack courting Mabel, daughter of a disapproving Colonel. The Colonel distrusts Jack's "socialistic theory" and literary ambitions as dangerous to the country, yet Jack is gradually winning him over. The excerpt ends with Jack and Mabel alone together when the Colonel unexpectedly delays—setting up dramatic tension. This appears to be satirizing early 20th-century class anxieties about radical intellectuals and courtship propriety. **Advertisements (Right Side):** Two product ads—Welch's Grape Juice (emphasizing purity and naturalness) and the Iver Johnson revolver (stressing safety features). The revolver ad's tagline "You Must Pull the Trigger" and "Accidental Discharge Impossible" markets the gun as foolproof and safe. The juxtaposition is jarring to modern readers: a domestic romance story adjacent to firearm marketing, reflecting an era when such advertising was routine in mainstream publications and handguns were marketed directly to general audiences without current safety restrictions or social controversy.

He was a good listener, especially with such a stake ahead of him. The Colonel, on his part, felt that he had a sacred duty to perform. ‘Now there’s a young man,” he said to his daughter, “who is capable of doing infinite harm to this country through a lot of socialistic theory. He’s writing a book with- out knowing anything about the subject at all. And, of course, his purpose is to stir up the masses. The trouble with these literary chaps is that they know nothing practical. And they are likely to cause infinite harm.” “He seems awfully sensible, papa.” “Well, I must say he appears better than I gave him credit for at first. But Lord! I wouldn't trust him. He’s on his good behavior. Don’t be fooled. They’re a treacherous lot. Nothing stable about them. Pretty good actors when they want to be. But I really think I’m making some impression upon him.” Tt was one evening nearly a month later than this that Jack, having made an engagement with the Colonel on the previous day, rang the bell promptly at eight o'clock. He was duly admitted by the maid, but when | the portitres were drawn, instead of the Colonel’s stately form, only Mabel entered the room—alone. “Have you seen papa?” “Why, no. Yesterday he told me I might come to-night, so, of course, I assumed that he would be here.” “He telephoned he would not be home to din- ner, but I might expect him later. That there was an important meeting—something about the new street railway.” “Yes,” replied Stenson, quietly. “I knew something about that—I’ve been keeping in touch with that situation myself. But it hasn’t kept me out nights yet. Now, in the meantime, at’s to be done with me? Did he mention me?” “No. He didn’t.” “Well, my agreement in the beginning was | that I was to sce you only in his presence. But, on the other hand, I made this engagement to meet him here to-night. It isn’t my fault, is it, if he is not here? I certainly can’t leave, for if I did, I should not be keeping my side of it.” Mabel smiled. “No,” she said. “That wouldn’t be right. You'd better stay.” “But do you want me to stay?” “Why not? 1” Jack advanced boldly. “There’s no time to lose,” he said. ‘Dearest, your father may be here at any moment. We may not have a chance like this for a long time.” “Wel” ey Don’t you want me to stay? I'll go if you” — “No, no! Do stay.” “Do you love me?” “It would not be right for me” “Do you love me?” “Think of what papa might say.” “Do you love me?” “Please don’t ask me.” “Then I will tell you. I feel that you must. You cannot help it. I shall make you.” He put his arms fiercely about her.
