What you’re looking at

This page contains **three humorous anecdotes** and **period advertisements**, not political cartoons. The main story, "Saving the Situation," describes a theater actor who accidentally pulls the wrong bell-cord during a melodrama, triggering a snow-effect meant for act two. Rather than breaking character, he improvises brilliantly, claiming he "opened the skylight"—turning the mishap into a comedic moment that saves the scene. Two shorter pieces follow: one about a desert plant that retains its dormant cycle even when transplanted to New York, and another about an unusual automobile-house in Chicago with motorized living quarters. The **advertisements** promote Knox Hats (exclusive retailer claim), Rhine wines, and Pompeian Massage Cream (a skin product marketed to aging women concerned with appearing youthful—reflecting early 1900s beauty anxieties about wrinkles and age visibility). The page reflects early 20th-century concerns: theatrical entertainment, botanical curiosity, automotive novelty, and female beauty standards emphasizing youth.

Saving the Situation ‘HE manager of a New York theatre tells of the quickness of thought of a certain actor. The play being produced was a good, old-fashioned melodrama, with a snow-storm in the second act. The first act was a drawing-room. In this scene the hard-hearted parent orders his daughter from his house, and, as she remains, imploring his for- giveness, he pulls the bell-cord for a servant, that she may be removed by force. All went well until this point was reached. Unluckily, however, instead of pulling the bell- cord, he caught the one which opened the snow- box, and instantly the large white flakes filled the air and covered the carpet and furniture. “Bah! I have opened the skylight!” the actor said, with well-simulated disgust, and gave the proper cord an angry jerk.—Lippincott. LANT memory is a problem for the inquisi- tive botanist, says the Dundee Advertiser. In 1901 a plant allied to the squash and pumpkin was taken to New York from the desert of Sonora, in Mexico, and since then it has been kept—without watering—in a strange climate three thousand six hundred miles from home. During the six weeks of rain in the desert the plant grows its leaves and flowers and perfects its seed. Then it dries up, and leaves only a water-filled gourd, which a thick, hard shell seals against animals and evaporation. The trans- planted specimen still remembers the rainy f si It wakes, sends out rootlets, stems and then dries up again until the fol- lowing year.—New York Tribune. son HAT is asserted to be the only automobile house in the country is now in Chicago.
