What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising** interspersed with humor columns, not political satire. The content includes: **"What Man Should Eat"** – A serious dietary essay arguing humans are naturally frugivorous (fruit-eating), based on comparative anatomy of teeth and bowel length, advocating fruits, nuts, and unleavened bread over meat. **"An Actual Conversation"** – Two brief jokes. The first puns on the 1912 Democratic convention at Buffalo, calling it an "auction" (likely referencing corruption or money's influence). The second involves an actor whose gardener uses expensive imported Italian salad oil to lubricate a lawn mower—a joke about waste and class confusion. **Advertisements** dominate: Winchester rifles, Sultan rug fasteners, and Old Crow whiskey. The page reflects early 20th-century concerns with health, diet reform, and political cynicism about conventions, but is not primarily satirical commentary.

LIFE What Man Should Eat HOSE who do not want to rank as extremists will do well to eschew the glandular organs, such as sweetbreads and liver, to pin their faith tomutton and one or two kinds of fish, to give up | coffee and drink weak China tea.. Those who h to go further should reflect first that man is er carnivorous nor herbivorous. For long, sientists have obscured the view by useless] arguments as to whether or not a man was| meant to live like a cow. There are other species than the flesh and gass-eating animals; all students of comparative anatomy know now that the teeth of human beings are identical with those of the frugivorous apes who live on fruits and nuts. Not only so, but the proportion of bowel length to body length in man corresponds exactly with that in the same sfecies in marked contrast to what obtains in all amivorous animals where the bowel is pro- portionally short. A study of anatomy therefore suggests a fruit Get as the most suitable; further confirmation is afforded by the obvious predilection of nearly all children for such food. The best fruits for food ar apples, bananas, grapes, nuts, dates, raisins and figs, Nuts are especially valuable owing to the large amount of fat they contain; the old-fashioned idea shat they are indigestible is due partly to the eror in taking them at the end of an already more than ample meat meal, and partly to insufh- Gent mastication. Chestnuts are the easiest to digest and make an excellent food. Many other | fruits may be taken, always remembering that sone fruits sometimes disagree, and that acid should be taken in moderation. Straw- es contain a considerable amount of purins hould be avoided by all with a gouty or theumatic tendency. Among fruits we include | those of the cereals, such as wheat and rice. White bread is free from purin, but brown con- | uins a varying amount derived from the husk. | The most wholesome form of bread is unleavened. Lance, An Actual Conversation ONES: Well, Smith, what do you think of the action of the convention ? Swit: What convention? The Democratic convention at Buffalo.” “That wasn’t a convention. It was an auc- tion.” —Auburn Citizen. Wien Robert Edeson walked into his-garden at his country place in Sag Harbor a few momings ago, he found his gardener with a small oil can limbering up the lawn mower. “Where did you get the oil?” asked Edeson. “In the cellar, sir.” “We had no machine oil in the cellar.” “know it, sir.” “Well, what are you using ?” “The oil from the Italian can I found there.” “My Italian oil! My salad oil! Stop it, man, Sop it. 1 brought that all the way from Rome, sn cost me as much as your month's wages.” “Exchange ¢ WINCHESTER Rifles Are Reliable Reliability, strength and accuracy are the cardinal virtues in a hunting rifle.
