In the piano-player, air takes the place of muscle; that is, the mechanical fingers of the piano-player are actuated by air. The bellows must provide the performer at all times with a reserve power, which will enable him to accent a note; to swing instantly from the softest pianissimo to the heaviest fortissimo or vice versa.
