This page is primarily **advertising with two satirical articles**. **"A Misdemeanor"** (top right) is a humorous anecdote about an understudy tenor in Henry Blossom's play "The Yankee Consul" who performs poorly—forgetting cues, ignoring stage business, and delaying songs. Despite his obvious failures, the understudy confidently tells the director he "got through it." The star sarcastically rewards him three dollars "for playing the part," mocking his obliviousness. **"A Work of Fiction"** (bottom) satirizes author Henry Savage Landor's tall tales about the Philippines. The Manila Sunday Sun quotes his implausible crocodile story—a 14-15 foot crocodile allegedly running toward them on outstretched limbs with its tail "high up in the air" before leaping into water. The piece suggests Landor either fabricates wildly or encountered impossible phenomena. Both pieces use humor to mock incompetence and exaggeration respectively. The remainder comprises product advertisements for luggage, beads, music hall performances, cocktails, water, and furniture.

A’ a recent matinee performance of Henry Blossom’s comedy, “The Yankee Con- sul,” Albert Parr, the tenor, sent a telegram to the stage director, Frank Ranney, conveying the information that he was confined to his bed and could not appear for the performance. “It is up to you,” said Ranney to the under- study. Among the things the understudy forgot to do were to give proper “cues,” to ignore all the ‘‘ business”’ of his part, and neglect to take up one of his songs until the orchestra had given him the opening bars three or four times. The afternoon was an anxious one for the members of the company. There was one per- son, however, who did not think he had done so badly—the understudy—and, when the final curtain was down, he walked to where Hitch- cock and Ranney were muttering soft im- precations on the afternoon’s performance, and in a confident tone said: “Well, I got through it, didn’t I? For a little while I was staggered, but I got through it.” “Yes,” said the star, “you got through with it,” and then turning to Ranney he said: “Fine “| him three dollars for playing, the part.”— Harper's Weekly. Sunday Sun, casts the following doubts on a well-known author: Henry Savage Landor is either a remarkable prevaricator of the truth or else wonders exist in the Philippine Islands that the average man knows nothing about. Listen to this: “Parts of Palawan Island are infested by man-eating crocodiles, which attack men on the shores at night. They have been known to climb into boats. Once, while the author was in a boat in a shallow bay, one was seen: “On the most northerly islet of the barrier, a huge crocodile, some fourteen or fifteen feet long, was sleeping soundly on the beach. Liew- tenant Boren sent a bullet into him, which woke up the brute with a start. It ran at a terrific pace toward us—not dragging its body, As most people would imagine, upon the gronnd, but with outstretched limbs supporting his entire body and tail high up in the air; then it gave a splendid leap into space and disap- peared with a big splash into the water.” There are lots of good things like this in the book, which is certain to be rushed when re- duced from four dollars to fifty cents.
