What you’re looking at
This is primarily an **advertising page** from Life magazine, not a satirical cartoon page. The page contains multiple product advertisements interspersed with brief editorial content. The notable editorial item is a humorous anecdote about **Dr. Daniel Coit Gilman**, president of the Carnegie Institution, addressing rumors he would resign due to old age. When asked why he wouldn't resign, Gilman quotes his elderly colleague Joseph Le Conte: "Why should I resign? I have just begun my life's work." The joke celebrates intellectual vigor in old age—a mild satire on ageist assumptions. The advertisements promote Edison phonographs, photographic lenses (Goerz brand), Swiss chocolate (Cailler's), typewriters (Smith Premier), and other consumer goods typical of the era. The page reflects early 20th-century consumer culture and contemporary attitudes toward aging professionals.

Union Sq., NewYork RUMOR has recently gone the rounds of the newspapers stating that Dr. Daniel Coit Gilman, the president of the Carnegie In- stitution at Washington, was about to resign his office. Many different reasons for the res- ignation were given, among them being that he was breaking down from old age. At last, to get at the truth of it all, a reporter called upon him for a little first-hand information. “Resign?” was Dr. Gilman's answer; “cer- tainly not.” And after an instant’s pause he added: “Joseph Le Conte, my old colleague at the University of California, was asked just such a question as you have put to me on his eighticth birthday. His reply will do for mine. He said: ‘Why should T resign? I have just begun my life’s work.’ ""—Argonaut, TRACT from the’regimental orders of the Nevermindwho Volunteers: No one of the guard, with the exception of the sentry, is allowed to sleep outside of the guard tent."—Sporting Times.
