Sir:—Hav read the extremely clever | and humorous hypothetical “Diary of a Chris- | tian Scientist” in your issue of the roth inst., and also the two references to Christian Sci- | ence which appeared in Lire for March 17, we beg to offer a kindly remonstrance against the} practice of making Christian Science an object of jest. As a matter of fact, a genuine Christian Sci- ence mother is a model practical housewife, and not at all unmindful of her responsibilities to her husband and family. She knows that anxiety and worry will not benefit those around her, but this does not prevent her from dis- charging any necessary household duties, It must be remembered that religion is a serious subject, although its adherents are fre-| quently very happy people and appreciative of a good joke, even when directed against them selves. It does not seem right, however, to make fun of a religious system which is doing such inestimable good as is Christian Science. Only this week a Christian Scientist told ina public meeting of the healing of a child from an abscess on the mastoid bone. When the Scientist was called all preparations had been made for a surgical operation; the parents not realizing that their child could be relieved by Christian Science, had only sought its sust: ing influence in meeting this trying ordeal, When the Scientist arrived the surgeon had gone out, and in the meanwhile, after comfort- ing the parents, one treatment was given to the child. When the surgeon returned with the family physician and nurses to perform the operation some hours later, no trace of the dis- ease could be found. ne doctor expressed the greatest surprise, and pronounced the case a k of nature. He said that it was quite providential, as the child might not have sur- vived the operation. In view of the many benefits being conferred by Christian Science, we do not think that the subject would be spoken of lightly were it bet- ter understood, and until then we hope it will not again be considered as a subject of ridicule. | Yours very truly, Richard P. Ac- tive opposition or even persecution of a popular imposture often only stimulates its development, | but ridicule is a more potent weapon and finds more easily the vulnerable point in a false doc- trine. “Live and let live” is an old principle.
