THE CHRISTMAS CENTURY {| CONTAINS the opening instalment of a story which every reader of LIFE will want to read,—“Lovey Mary,” by Alice Cald- well Hegan, the author of that very successful little book, “Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch.” It is the story of a little girl who is, at first, an inmate of a charitable institution. Achild has been put into ner care and is about to be taken away from her, so she runs away with her charge and joins the colony in the “Cabbage Patch,” and Mrs. Wiggs and her geographical children, with Miss Hazy and Chris and the rest, become characters in the story. Anda capital story it is—the kind that does you good to read. From “Lovey Mary.” Mary found Mrs. Wiggs alone, getting supper she e plunged into her eubfect at once.— I've got a dollar . Wiggs turned the girl around and surveyed her “Well, I don’t know as I blame you fer wantin’ to git shut of that one, There ain't more ’n room enough fer one leg in that skirt, let alone two. An’ what was the sense in them big shiny buttons?” I don’t know as it makes much difference,” , disconsolately ; me look nice.”” Mrs. Wiggs shook her by the shoulders good-natured! ‘Now, here,” she said, ‘don't you go an’ git sorry at ’s one thing I can’t stand in nobody. lots of other folks you kin be sorry fer’ stid of yereelf.
