Having had the honor this autumn to visit in a country house near New York at the same time as x golf champion, whose achievements on the links were thrilling the country, I learned many curlous things about athletic damsels and their ways. The young lady in question arrived a week before the tournament that was to decide her supremacy, accom- panled by her Engitsh trainer, a masseuse, and incidentally by her mamma, a feebie-minded lady, so completely demoral- ized by ber daughter's celebrity that she could talk of little else, and would confide, with litte thrilis of pride, to any one she could get to listen to her, how she could not take a ferry-boat or trolley car without being potnied out as the mother of the “champion.” Nothing more cnrions than the habits of the young athlete herself can be imagined. Aftera morning round of the links in company with the coach, she was banded over to her woman keeper, to be douched and rubbed and curry-combed till lunch- con time. The afternoon was passed exercising in & sma fitted up In the bililard-room for her use.
