# Explanation for Modern Readers This *Life* magazine page contains satirical commentary on Gilded Age corruption and domestic humor. **Main cartoon (left):** A humorous domestic scene where a man named George is caught smoking indoors, then deflects blame by claiming his brother Jude set the hair mattress on fire with a candle—a joke about male irresponsibility and creative excuse-making. **Political commentary (center text):** The piece praises Assistant District Attorney Jerome for convicting Alderman Barker despite "Tammany" (the corrupt Democratic political machine controlling New York City) pressure. It suggests Jerome's conviction of a "district heeler" (low-level political operative) for assault is so rare that it deserves special recognition—and that Jerome has likely damaged his own career by actually doing his job honestly. The final comment mocks Atlas/mythology, implying supporting a fashionable wife would be harder than supporting the world. **Advertisements (right):** Small illustrated want-ads typical of the era: "Board Wasted Immediately," "Messenger Boy Wanted," "Wanted Experienced Workers in Hair."

Voice from the other room: GEORGE CULPEPPER, IF YOU DON'T PUT THAT CIGARETTE OUT, PLL COME IN THERE WITH ONE OF MY WINTER SLIPPERS! George : "TANT A CIGARETTE, MOTHER, JUDE SET TH HAIR-MATTRESS AFIRE WITH THE CANDLE. SSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY JEROME deserves special credit for securing the conviction of Alderman Barker. Mr. Jerome only did his duty, but even that is a remarkable occurrence where the duty consists in securing the punishment of a Tammany politician. The assault committed by Barker was of a particularly heinous nature, andevery influence knownto politicians hereabouts was brought to bear on Mr. Jerome to swerve him from his duty. As it is, he has probably lost all chance for future preferment at the hands of the politicians. Notwithstanding the threats and cajolery brought to bear on him, he secured the conviction of Barker and that “ district heeler" is sentenced to four months’ impris- onment—an entirely inadequate punishment under the circumstances, At supported the world, but it is not recorded that he ever supported a fashionable wife. That would have been an accomplishment worth brag- ging about. ILLUSTRATED ADVERTISEMENTS. WANTED EXIEKIENCED WORKERS IN IIAIK. comicbooks.com
