# Analysis of Life Magazine Page 38 This page contains theater reviews rather than political cartoons. The main illustration shows a large man with a gun and small figures—likely satirizing **"The Inconstant,"** a play reviewed in the "DRAMA" section. The text criticizes the play for wasting "splendid dramatic forces" under Mr. Augustus Daly's direction, suggesting the talented cast deserves better material. The reviewer argues the production is overly elaborate—like using an "eighty-ton gun" to kill a microbe—when the play itself lacks substance. Other brief reviews mention **Captain Farquhar's play**, **Herr Seidl's concert** at Chickering Hall featuring Mme. Fanny Moran Olden, and shows titled **"Beyond Redemption"** and **"Uncle Tom's Cabin."** The tone is witty and dismissive of mediocre theatrical productions.

LIFE a plot than we are willing to. Audiences to whom a sign, “This is a Forest,” meant as much as the most elaborate work of the scenic artist does to their descendants, could let their imaginations take care of similar bare spots in the construction of the play itself. Captain Farquhar’s play never had a better production in all its long life than Mr. Daly gives it. His actors and ac- tresses, trained in their art, working to produce a dramatic harmony under the best of stage management, and with ex- cellent dramatic accessories, give the piece a representation with which very little fault can be found. And all these can put only a limited interest into the play itself, and the very excellences of the performance make us wish that they had been concentrated on something better worth the while. * * * ODOM was a pretty bad town, and Gomorrah is reputed to have been worse, if anything. We all know what happened to those wicked cities. And yet neither of them ever was obliged to endure Mrs. Potter and Mrs. Langtry in Shakespearian drama at the same time. New York must ¥, MISTER, IS DER ICE STRONG ENOUGH TER HOLD ME bea very wicked city indeed ! Metcalfe. * * I* spite of rain and a rival orchestra at Chickering Hall, Herr Seidl assembled > goodly and appreciative audi- ence at his third concert. Tnose who braved the storm were well rewarded in the opening piece, Liszt's beautiful symphonic poem “Les Preludes,” which was given with brilliancy and careful shading. Mme. Fanny Moran Olden, the soloist of the evening, sang Eglantine’s aria from Euryanthe and Isolden’s Liebestod with sufficient fire, but a total disregard of the key, which THE INCONSTANT. was often painful. She was greatly applauded, however, by the good-natured audience, who also showed a willing- ness to appreciate, if possible, Rubenstein’s somewhat dreary “Dramatic Symphony.” The orchestra, as usual, did ad- mirable work, and the concert, from that standpoint, was certainly a success. HERE exists a strong prejudice against using an eighty-ton gun to annihilate a microbe. It may very thoroughly impair the usefulness of the microbe—it may completely secure the desired result —but the wear and tear on the gun, ww and the waste of material, which NeGn might be better employed, is not Sa generally commended. Just so the concentration of the splendid dramatic forces at Mr. Augustin Daly's command, on a play like ‘‘ The Inconstant,” seems like energy thrown away. BEYOND REDEMPTION. “The Inconstant”” was a favorite with our RS. MANHATTAN: But what a hopelessly vulgar ancestors. lot those Jones’s are!
