# Analysis of Life Magazine Page 204 (October 1883) This page contains no visible cartoon. Instead, it features three sections: 1. **Amusements** - listings for the Metropolitan Opera House's Italian opera and Academy of Music performances, with cast members and venue details. 2. **The Political Outlook** - three brief dispatches about Massachusetts politics, reporting on Governor Butler's expected election victory with a majority of at least 10,000 votes, and noting Republican opposition tactics including distribution of the "Skin pamphlet." 3. **Butler Interviewed** - a satirical Q&A dialogue between a correspondent and Governor Butler, where Butler appears evasive and contradictory regarding his political future and the Republican party's internal divisions. The satire targets Butler's political ambitions and perceived inconsistencies rather than visual caricature.

[Special to Lire.) Boston, Oct. rgth, 1883. NDICATIONS now point to the election of Gov. Butler by a rousing majority, Glory, Hallelujah. Gero. F. Hoar. [Special to Lire.] Boston, Oct. 20th, 1883. I can now state authoritatively, that Robinson's majority will be at least 10,000; Butler’s Spooksbury argument is being freely circulated, and “skin ballots” are being distributed all through the state. Joun K. Tarnox. [Special to Lire.) Tewxspury, Oct. 20th, 1883. The paupers have‘come out solid for Butler. The “skin ” games of the Republicans and lack of poultry in the chicken soup has made many enemies for the party in this quarter. O. A. BUTLER INTERVIEWED. [Special to Lire.) Oct. 20th. Your correspondent called on his Excellency this evening, and the following conversation occurred: “Good evening, Governor ?” “ Good evening,” replied his Excellency, showing the urbanity which characterizes the man’s private life, contrasting it so unfavorably and strongly with his demagogism as a public servant. “Governor, I understand, you are deaf in both eyes ?” “That,” said the Governor, “is a campaign lie. I am only paralysed in one eye, sir, at atime. The Republican party tries to make capital over a deformity which I have had the misfortune to own up to for the last ten years.” “Would you mind informing me how it was that this misfortune befell you ?” “Certainly not. I strained my eyes in regarding my political future. I watched both parties for several years, and they at first were widely divergent.- They have now reached a common centre—spoils—and, naturally, my eyes have reached such a degree of con- centration, that they bisect. That's all.” “How do you regard your chances in the coming election?” “T am confident that I shall be.” “You shall be—er ?” suggested the reporter. “Yes, that I shall be,” replied the Governor blinking blandly. “ You are confident then ?” “Tam.” “ Of what, your Excellency ?” comicbooks.com
