# "Judging the News" - October 30, 1928 This page contains political commentary and two cartoons. The top cartoon depicts people on a log with a net, illustrating an article comparing college academics to football—criticizing students who prioritize sports over studies. The main lower cartoon shows a car accident with the caption "Some horn you've got, Jones!" The driver apparently honked his horn so aggressively that he caused a collision, suggesting satire about dangerous or excessive automobile horn use—a common public nuisance complaint in the 1920s. The "Judging the News" section includes commentary on Senator Borah, the Republican National Committee's campaign prospects, and mentions Illinois and Pennsylvania senators regarding "Tammany" (New York's political machine), placing this during the 1928 election season.

JUDGING THE NEWS An excellent way to get a line on the ademic situation is to compare the number of rotogra- vure pictures of students who are carrying footballs with the ones who are carrying books. In this campaign, at least, we are inclined to think of the resur- rected full dinner pail as the old hokum bucket. A reporter, who recently inter- viewed Senator Borah, says he found him surprisingly genial. The reporter, we take it, did not inquire after the Senator's “con- science fund.” With all due respect to the Re- publican National Committee, quite a few of us wish we were as prosperous as they say we are. As we go to press we are not sure of how Illinois and Penn sylvania are going to go, but we trust Senators Smith and Vare will sce to it that they vote against the horrible corruption of ‘Tammany. And so end the campaigns of “The Happy Warrior” and the man “Too Proud to Fight.” —Jack Suurrieworrn JUDGH, Ven 1579, Additional entry at Jamaica, 1. 1 . toa copyrighted 190%, by ito the U. 3. aad Grea Pred Le Toe New York, N.Y.
