“Won’t she go?” I asked, sitting down and lighting a cigarette. Wilfred stared. “Gol” he said. “I’m trying to tune her up to eighty. If I can get another half-mile out of her, I’ll do it too.” I smiled a sort of calm, superior smile. “Now take away the number you first thought of,” I said. “What do you mean?” “I should say about forty-eight is her outside speed,” I said. “But if you put in any more of that work with that spanner, it'll be nearer thirty-five.” Wilfred looked at me as though he hated me; probably he did. u seen her on the road She’ll do a mile in the first_ minute.” “Downhill?” “No.” “All right, Wilfred. You needn’t shout. I dare say she can beat horse traffic on a good level road, but all the same she doesn’t look to me like a really fast car, and from the cut of her jib I should say pretty sluggish on hills.” “She eats them,” said Wilfred. “Well, it’s all right if you're satis- fied, I suppose, but it must be beastly being passed by everything on the road.” “Passed by —!” gasped Wilfred, purple in the face, and very nearly swallowing the spanner. “I'll bet you'd funk a trip in her, full out.” “I'd love it,” I said. ‘To-mor- row—” “I thought so,” sneered Wilfred. “To-morrow never comes. Why not now? I'll show you.” “Some nice easy bit of road with a down gradient, I suppose.” “T'll go where the blazes you like!” “Very well, I'll come. If you can get to—er—Little Hopping, say, by four, I'll admit anything you like. Think you can?” “There and back,” said Wilfred, flinging the spanner into a corner and climbing aboard. “There will do,” I murmured. xk * “Well, good by, Wilfred,” I said, as we pulled up with a jerk in Little Hopping at three fifty-seven. “Thanks, so much.” “Aren't you coming back?” asked Wilfred. “Not with you.” “Do you mean—?” “I do, Wilfred. Your car is too fast for me. It is awfully good of you to have brought me, but next time I arrange to take Anthea out to tea at four, I shall start early, and walk. Good-by!” Humorist.
