What you’re looking at

This two-panel cartoon satirizes urban motorists' weekend behavior. The top panel, "Sunday A.M.—The city motorists go to the country," shows well-dressed city dwellers driving automobiles into a pristine natural landscape. The bottom panel, "Sunday P.M.—They return with it," depicts the same motorists departing, having visibly damaged and littered the countryside—trees are broken, the landscape is scarred and strewn with debris. The satire targets early 20th-century leisure culture: wealthy city residents' automobile tourism and their destructive environmental impact.
