The Deadly Taxi With apologies to all the detectif writers) Cuaprer ONE It was midnight. A richly gowned woman stepped out from the shadows of a brownstone house and hailed a taxi. A pink and white cab coming down the avenue answered her summons and she quickly entered after mumbling an address. It was a short drive and when the chauffeur jumped down from his seat and opened the door the cab was empty! He lit a match and looked inside and grew cold with horror. Piled in a heap were seven dead men! He renewed his search with de- termination and soon his patience was rewarded, She proved to be a beautiful girl about twenty and Carroll thrilled as their eyes met. “Pardon me,” he said, doffing his hat, “that perfume you use is one in a thou- sand. May I ask you some question: She nodded her head and they seated themselves on the nearby curb. She looked so sad he hated to question her but putting his sentiment to one side he blurted, “Where were you the night of December 23?” She stiffened perceptibly. In a shaky voice she answered, “I dined with my Unele, After dinner I took a pink and white taxi—” Carroll jumped to his feet. “Enough!” he cried, “the problem is solved!
