Without moving from his chair, without loss of time from his affairs, he may travel an open track to any of those places at any time of day or night. In the private life of the indi- vidual the urgent need of instant and personal long distance communication is an emergency that comes infrequently—but it is imperative when it does come. In the business life of the nation it is a constant neces- sity.
