What you’re looking at
This page from *Judge* magazine contains primarily **advertisements and sports content**, not political satire. The main editorial content is "Yarns of the Ballplayers" by Ed A. Goewey, featuring **Johnny Evers**, captain of the 1914 World Series champion Boston Braves. Evers was nicknamed "The Crab" for his irritable temperament and harsh criticism of teammates' mistakes. The article presents anecdotes showing his humorous, good-natured side away from the ballfield—contrasting his public reputation. The page is dominated by period advertisements: Coca-Cola, a beauty improvement book, Evans' Ale, The Deaf Hear hearing aid device, Bermuda tourism, and medical remedies. These ads reflect early-20th-century consumer culture and the prevalence of dubious medical devices marketed directly to readers. The final proverb about women sentenced to "hard labor" in marriage is typical of the era's casual, somewhat cynical humor about matrimony.

ANTHONY BARKER Barker Bldg., 110 W, 42nd St..N. Y. C. By ED A, GOEWEY Johnny Evers, Boston Nationals ECAUSE of his disposition to ‘‘call’’ his teammates severely when they make misplays, particularly those of the “*bonehead"’ order, Johnny Evers, the hus- tling little captain of the world’s champion Boston Braves, often is referred to as ‘*The Crab." But no matter what his manner may be when cavorting about the diamond, when out of the limelight he fairly bubbles with humor and good nature and enjoys telling or hearing a good story. One of Johnny’s yarns runs like this: **One day, when unable to take part ina game because of an injury to my hand, I took a seat in the grandstand at St. Louis, to watch a game between the Cubs and the Cards. Soon after a large gentleman, evi- dently carrying more liquid ballast than was good for him, took a seat at my side, and, after a remark or two about the warm weather, fell asleep. During the contest, which was decidedly one-sided, two St. Louis twirlers were pounded from the mound, and there was no end of rooting on all sides, because the fans enjoyed the ex- tra base slugging which took place. But my neighbor heard and saw nothing, awak- ing only as the crowd started for the gate. ***Who wins game?’ he inquired. The Cubs, 11 to 1,’ I answered. “**Thanks,’ was his retort. ‘That's all T wanted to know. Just the essential facts of the game.""’ According to Johnny, Charley Moore, who played on the Pacific coast, holds the record for taking the longest baseball jour- ney with nothing coming to him at the end of it. Moore was drafted by the Reds a while back and came from Portland, Ore., to Hot Springs, after a trip made dangerous by repeated blizzards. He was on the road ten days, but just as he had finished his first meal at the hotel, the manager sold him, by wire, to Los Angeles. Moore took the night train back to the coast. He took that trip just to eat one meal in the majors, and never even had on a Cin- cinnati uniform.""
