What you’re looking at

This page is primarily **advertisements and humor columns**, not political cartoons. The content includes: **Advertisements:** Whiskey (Old Overholt Rye, Old I.W. Harper), diamonds on credit, hotels (Navarre, Plaza), cigars, and a fire-proof building. **Humor Section** ("Stories With Smiles"): Three anecdotes showcasing wit: 1. **Bishop Welldon's Retort**: A dean quips to actor Herbert Tree about missing "the odor of sanctity" after Tree claims to have encountered hundreds of different odors on a drive—a pun on ecclesiastical virtue. 2. **The Clever Child**: A girl imitates a housemaid by adopting overly familiar, flirtatious behavior toward male guests, shocking her father—satirizing both child precocity and servant-class stereotypes. 3. **Legal Wordplay**: A counsel attempts to trap a plaintiff into admitting bankruptcy; the plaintiff cleverly redefines "stopped payment" as having paid all debts. These are genteel, wordplay-focused humor pieces typical of early 20th-century Judge magazine—no caricatures or political satire present.

Stories With Smiles, The Odor He Missed.—A good illustra. tion of the wit of Bishop Welldon, the popular dean of Manchester, is afforded by the following story: Once at a lunch. eon given by the lord mayor of Man. chester, the dean sat next to Sir Herbert Tree. “Well, Mr. Tree, what have you been doing to-day?’’ he asked. “IT went for a long motor ride this morning and lost a bet,’’ replied the famous actor. “Indeed!"’ said the dean. ‘‘And may T ask what the bet was?"’ “T made a bet that we would pass through four hundred different odors, and we only encountered three hundred and ninety-nine.” “Ah!’' replied Bishop Welldon prompt- ly. ‘*You missed the odor of sanctity,” —The Strand. Realistic Imitation.—The occasion was a choice little tea party on the lawn, and the hostess was beaming and busy among her guests. “Yes,’’ she remarked, ‘‘my little girl is very clever. She can imitate almost any one.’’ “She can, my dear,’’ echoed the host delightedly. ‘Come, Alice; show what you cando. Pretend to be the house- maid."” . The little girl, eagerly enough, came forward and bowed to one of the guests. “Will you take some more tea, madam?’ she asked politely. Then she turned to another guest. “May I move your chair, madam? The sunlight is very strong.’’ At this the guests were exceedingly interested and asked for more. Backing away from her father, Alice exclaimed, in a terrified tone, “Sir, let me go! Don’t touch me, sir! Give you a kiss, indeed! Suppos- ing the missus was to hear you?” Then the clever little darling was wafted away suddenly.—Ezchange. ‘When He Stopped.—In a suit lately tried, the plaintiff had testified that his financial position had always been 8 good one. The opposing counsel took him in hand for cross-examination, and undertook to break down his testimony upon this point. “‘Have you ever been bankrupt?”’ asked the counsel. “T have not.”” “Now, be careful!’’ admonished the lawyer, with raised finger. ‘‘Did you ever stop payment?”’ “*Yes."" “Ah! I thought we should get at the truth!’’ observed the counsel, with an unpleasant smile. ‘‘When did this sus- pension of payment occur?’’ ‘*When I paid all 1 owed.""—Exchange.
