He was thinking of beautiful Mollye Grayce Van Dorey, the daughter of the wealthy But let us follow Our Hero. He packed his belongings and set the alarm. At three o’clock he stole through the morning light. He caught the inter- urban and sat blissfully unconscious of his own peril, but planning a scheme that was destined to mean much to him. At four o'clock he was standing before Van Loan McTavish and Van Arsdale Van Loon, With scarcely a word the three embarked in the Villain’s canoe, and to Our Hero was given the paddle. “Be patient, Van!’ hoarsely whis- pered the Villain to the man in the rear seat. Meanwhile, he was planning his marriage to the beautiful Lady Mollye. His eyes showed a savage gleam, but if Our Hero saw it he kept his counsel. But, gentle reader, Our Hero was also planning. ‘‘If only Ican catch him in savage mood, snap the view with my new twenty-dollar camera, and show the picture to Mollye Grayce, she will see he is not handsome and will cast him over.’’ As he sat and thought, he little dreamed the treachery of the accomplice in the other end of the canoe. Suddenly Our Hero seemed to feel peril, as if by instinct. He knew his time had come. He picked up the camera in one hand, pressed the bulb, and—but, before he could think, Van Loon, the accomplice, had tipped over the frail craft! But see! Our Hero is still holding the paddle! Now he catches for the box that held the belongings of all three! The stream is bearing him to the slimy rocks! And look!—oh, look, gentle reader! The camera floats! But you are impatient for the end. Suffice it to say that the film was not harmed, and Mollye Grayce Van Dorcy saw not only that her old lover could be homely in face—but she saw him help rock the canoe! It was a simple church wedding, but Mollye and Our Hero were never more beautiful in their young lives. And to this day you may see that camera in the best closet in their tiny home. And to this day Our Hero is acting it all out again in ten-twenty-and-thirty melo- drama.
