What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising with brief humorous anecdotes**, typical of Judge's format. The main cartoon (top left) shows a man at a desk smoking, advertising **Velvet tobacco** — positioning it as the "smoothest" product for discerning consumers who value quality. The page includes several short jokes: - "A Giraffe Laugh": A woman tricks County Commissioner Hart by claiming giraffes were excluded from a circus parade because they'd eat electric wire insulators—a absurd premise he falls for. - Other brief quips about dogs, violin lessons, and a boasting man's hat. The **advertisements** dominate the page, selling tobacco, rye whiskey (Old Overholt), foot powder (Allen's Foot-Ease), bitters, and binding services for Judge magazines. A photograph labeled "MY HAT" shows men in period dress, accompanying a joke about a man exchanging his hat at a restaurant. The content reflects early 20th-century consumer culture and Judge's formula of light satire mixed with advertising revenue. The humor relies on obvious wordplay and everyday situations rather than political commentary.

County Commissioner Hart is not an easy mark for the professional joker, but on the day of the circus parade he became the easy victim of an innocent- appearing young woman. Mr. Hart happened to pass through the office of the county clerk. As he passed one of the young women she asked him if he had seen the circus parade, and with a serious expression on her face said, “They took all the animals into the parade except the giraffe, and I under- stand he was not allowed to go on the street."” “I wonder why?” replied the commis- sioner. “They were afraid the giraffe would eat the currents off the electric wires,’’ explained the young woman.—Portland Oregonian.
