What you’re looking at

This page is primarily **advertising**, with several brief humorous anecdotes interspersed. The main illustrated content is "The Hypnotist," a James Montgomery Flagg artwork depicting hypnosis as a romantic/relationship tool—the joke being that a hypnotist has convinced a couple they're interdependent ("can't live without each other"). The text contains several short jokes typical of early 20th-century humor magazines: - A tourist-and-local exchange mocking a region's unpleasantness - A vegetarian who unknowingly eats a worm - A reverend trying to recruit a young man to church (who's actually visiting a girlfriend) - A drunk man attempting to "help" a shopkeeper reel in what he thinks is a real fish These are gentle, observational comedies about rural life, clerical earnestness, and inebriation—common Judge magazine fare. The remaining content consists of product advertisements for beer, cigars, trusses, electrical schools, and hotels. There is no overt political satire on this particular page.

What do you mean by that?” “Simply that there was a worm in that apple and you got it.’” As the new minister of the village was on his way to evening service, he met a rising young man of the place, whom he was anxious to have become a member of his church. ‘*Good-evening, my young friend,’’ he said solemnly. ‘*Do you ever attend a place of worship?” “Yes, indeed, sir; regularly every Sunday night,’’ replied the young fel- low, with asmile. ‘‘I'm on my way to see her now.”’ For the purpose of advertising fishing rods, a shopkeeper hung a large rod out- side his shop, with an artificial fish at the end of it. Late one night, Perkins, who had been dining a bit too well, happened to see the fish. Going cautiously to the door, he knocked gently. “‘Who's there?’’ demanded the shop- keeper from an upper window. “Sh-h! Don’t make a noise, but come down as quietly as you can,’’ whispered Perkins. Thinking something serious was the matter, the man dressed and stole down- stairs. “Now, what is it?’’ he inquired, “‘Hist!"’ admonished Perkins, ‘*Pull your line in quick; you've got a bite!"’ —Metropolitan Magazine.
