What you’re looking at

This page features **Vice-President James Sherman** in comparative caricature studies—the left image is a satirical drawing, the right a photograph. The format highlights how cartoonists exaggerate features for comedic effect. The page is primarily **miscellaneous humor and advertising** rather than focused political satire. Content includes: - Light verse about Easter and Egyptian pyramids - Wordplay jokes (the "purple cow/hen/egg" reference) - A humorous sketch of a boy's reaction to his sister's suitors - A Postum cereal advertisement disguised as a testimonial letter, claiming coffee causes headaches and nervousness while their product restores health The Sherman caricature appears designed to mock his appearance rather than any specific policy. The overall page reflects early 1900s magazine humor—mixing social observation with patent medicine advertising that made dubious health claims (here, attacking coffee while promoting Postum as a cure-all).

A LITTLE THING CHANS Coffee blots out the sunshine from many a home by making the mother or some other member of the household dyspeptic, nervous and irritable. There are thousands of cases where the proof is absolutely undeniable. Here is one. A Wisconsin mother writes: “Twas taught to drink coffee at an eurly age, and also at an early age be- came a victim to headaches, and as I grew to womanhood these headaches be- came a part of me, as I was scarcely ever free from them. ** About five years ago a friend urged me to try Postum. I made the trial and the result was so satisfactory that we have used it ever since. “‘My husband and little daughter were subject to bilious attacks, but they have both been entirely free from them since we began using Postum in- stead of coffee. I no longer have head- aches and my health is perfec If some of these nervous, tired, irri- table women would only leave off coffee absolutely and try Postum, they would find a wonderful change in their life. It would then be filled with sunshine and happiness rather than weariness and discontent. And think what an effect it would have on the family, for the mood of the mother is largely responsi- ble for the temper of the children. Read ‘‘The Road to Wellville,’’ in packages. ‘‘ There’s a Reason.’’ Ever read the above letter? A mew one appears from time to time. They are genuine, true, and full of human interest. comicbooks.com
