What you’re looking at
This is primarily an **advertising page** from Judge magazine, with one notable satirical piece. **Main Content:** The "Tame Cow-Whale" article is a humorous tall tale about a professor allegedly domesticating whales for milking—a pure fantasy meant to amuse readers with its absurdity. It's genteel nonsense rather than social commentary. **"Robbie's Essay on Wisconsin"** is a light satire on schoolboy writing, featuring intentional misspellings and rambling observations (pine trees, sugar beets, tobacco, game wardens, taxes) that gently mock both childish composition and Wisconsin politics. The teacher's grammar correction ("to whom") provides the punchline. **The "Hair Raising" joke** is domestic humor: a husband wants thrilling reading; his wife offers her dressmaker's bill—implying its cost is genuinely shocking. The page is otherwise filled with period product advertisements (Lea & Perrins sauce, Cook's Champagne, Mennen's powder, home-building guides) typical of early 20th-century magazines. No significant political figures or events are caricatured here.

A genius up at the Balena whale-fish- cries has, according to veracious reports, succeeded in domesticating the cow- whale. The whales are not exactly house- hold pets yet, but according to Professor Muller, their owner, they are very useful. Fifty of the whales’ come daily to a little inlet and are milked, each of them giving five to seven hogsheads a day of milk. When the adventurous Professor Muller began to experiment with cow-whales he found great difficulty in persuading them to keep still while being milked. The whales could not understand the process. But they like good things to eat, particu- larly sweets. They were lured, a few at a time, into an inlet, where they were fed with choice whale food. At last they were taught that no milk meant no food. And they submitted. They now stand without hitching, and have never been known to put a foot in the pail when stamping to keep off flies—Mew York | Tribune. | ROBBIE’S ESSAY ON “WISCONSIN.” wisconsin is our hoam state and we like it beekaus there is always sumthing doing in politicks.
