What you’re looking at

This Judge magazine page contains three satirical pieces: **"Ancient Finance"** mocks Jewish financial practices by presenting a false biblical origin story: Aaron supposedly convinced Moses to ban pork to monopolize the market and profit. The "joke" relies on antisemitic stereotypes portraying Jews as scheming moneygrubbers who invented dietary restrictions for financial gain. **"Their Peculiarity"** satirizes women's rational dress reform (bloomers) through a brief dialogue suggesting the garments fit poorly—a common anti-feminist criticism of the era. **"His Field"** and related vignettes are genteel social humor about churches near golf courses and etiquette violations (cracking nuts with teeth). The page primarily attacks Jewish people and women's dress reform. These stereotypes were mainstream in Judge's era, though they're now recognized as bigoted. The content reflects period prejudices rather than presenting legitimate satire.

ANCIENT FINANCE. P REVIOUS to the Jew- ish dispensation the Jews were at liberty to eat pork, and large quantities were consumed by them. But Aa- ron, being a thrifty man of affairs, one day said to his brother Moses, “What for the people have all this gold and silver in jewelry and gods of gold and silver? It is of no use to them, I will tell you what to do. You, Moses, write and tell them to throw all of these things into the river.” So Moses MR, CANDLESTICK (tho doesn't happen to notice his son's made the desir- position)—** Whew! that thermometer has gone up seventy de- ed command, grees while I have been looking at it.” and the people obeyed the same. After this was done Aaron was careful to take his brother Moses at night; they went together and gathered up all this treasure. But Aaron was the custodian of it; so after a while Aaron turned in and bought up all the pork in the land and raised the price. When Moses learned of this a fierce quarrel arose between the brothers for a division of the profits. Aaron wanted all, obstinately refusing to share with his brother. So Moses published another decree, forever forbidding the Jews to eat pork, So Aaron was long on pork—and the Jews to this day eat none. THEIR PECULIARITY. Mrs, Dorcas—" You may say what you like about the rational dress, but you never saw a pair of bloomers that bagged at the knees.” Dorcas—" Why, my dear, they bag all over.” es U We Gus-DIAKS-3B HIS FIELD.
