What you’re looking at
This page contains several brief political opinion pieces rather than cartoons. The "A Vicious Sport" section criticizes Adirondack hunters who mistake deer for humans, arguing the resemblance between man and deer should inspire restraint in shooting. "Pie" discusses a newly formed "Great Pie Trust" incorporating Albany bakeries, satirizing how monopolies control food industries and manipulate prices through artificial scarcity. "A Lost Celebrity" concerns Aguinaldo's secretary, Señor Sixto Lopez, brought to America by Warren. The piece mocks efforts to locate him for authentication of documents, suggesting he may have become a vagrant or invisible person in Boston—commentary on Filipino independence politics and American imperial entanglement following the Spanish-American War. The bottom cartoon depicts a domestic scene with unclear specific references.

WHY DO so many persons get shot in the Adirondacks under the misapprehension that they are deer? Do the victims because of 4 their surroundings grow to look like deer? Are they the victims of their environment? Do they grow horns that are invisible to all but the men who shoot them? One would naturally think that no two beings look more unlike than a man and a deer or a woman and a deer; and it would bea queer bonnet that would seem even to a near-sighted man to be a set of antlers, Happily, the season of shooting men and women under the supposition that they are deer has nearly passed; but in behalf of the next season it would be well to label the creatures respectively so that all might read, “This is a deer,” or “Don’t shoot—this is a man.” PIE, GREAT PIE TRUST has been incorporated at Albany. So many writers have been pitching into pie that it has nearly passed out of the list of delicacies and is seldom mentioned at the average boarding- table or indeed in the average family, and even the New England article is pretty generally tabooed. The pie trust, as a resurrection- ary institution, ought at first glance to be encouraged; but on the other hand. as everybody ought to have’ more or less Pie. if it is good, the price of it ought to be in the hands of no particular monopoly. ‘Therefore, as between no pie and high- priced pie, one is at a loss whether to discourage this enter prise. Perhaps the middle course would be best—to let it go on and when fairly established and putting its prices in the air to bust its crust. A LOST CELEBRITY. SOMEBODY jin Boston brought Aguinaldo’s secretary. Seior Sixto Lopez, to this country, and now refuses to recognize his responsibility or the man himself. Therefore the setior is lonesome, and doesn’t know how to get on the stump or the lezture-platform, or how to get his book published. One story has it that several ladies joined purses to bring him over, but the ladies deny it The Boston Herald says, however, that a Mr. Warren proposed his advent to the anti-imperialistic league, and as they declined to furnish the money he resigned from the league and got up a purse himself, Whether that story is true or not Mr. Warren doesn’t particularly say; but he has ceased to have interest in Seior Lopez, ap- parently looking upon him as a white elephant of a limited haps fearing that he may be accused of treason, along with the visitor, and put to considerable trouble. It is unfortunate, under the circumstances, that Mr. Barnum is not alive; but something must be done or the poor fellow will have no visible or invisible means of subsistence and may even have to pass the cup as the chief assistant of the man with a hand-organ.
