The man who plays golf, rides a wheel, plays base-ball, or who exercises his body in auy moderate way, has found out, like his professional brother, that a certain loss of nerve force and power follows the frequent use of alcoholic stimulants or of drugs. The history of the prize-ring alone shows that some of the most powerful men who have bat- ded for physical supremacy in this country have wrecked magnificent physiques in this manner, just as we have seen hundreds of the brightest and most promising minds in ather callings ruined through the same agency. In view of this it is certainly instructive to consider the heavy handicap under which the man of average or inferior physique must labor Who has become addicted to the liquor habit—or rather to the liquor désease. For that it really is a diseased condition of the body, which affects the confirmed drinker and drives him faster and faster to ruin, no one can now doubt. Time was, only a few years ago, when a man afflicted by the liquor tabit was finally given up for lost if he could not respond to the appeals and threats of moral suasion, Those were the days when many thousands of strong bodies and keen intellects were lost forever because no scientific treatment for their diseased physical con- dition had yet been discovered, or even dreamed of, Now, however, all this is changed.
