# Analysis of Judge Magazine Page This page critiques the 1896 Democratic presidential nomination contest. The main cartoon depicts urban poverty and suffering, serving as visual commentary on Democratic policy debates. The text "A Great National Danger" warns that Judge van Wyck's potential nomination would mirror Bryan's candidacy—both representing similar threats to the magazine's Republican perspective. "King Croker" references Richard Croker, Tammany Hall's boss, satirizing how Democratic machine politicians secretly wielded power while publicly denying it. "Two American Princes" compares British royalty (Prince John) to American political heirs, mocking the aristocratic pretensions of wealthy Democratic families. The scattered minor items ("How to Marry," "Revival of a Snake") appear to be typical magazine filler, not directly related to the main political content.

Most OF US live for the sole pur- pose of making our be- loved physicians rich. T HE GREAT CRIME of Drey- fus, in the view of the French army, is the fact of his innocence. WHEN BROTH- ER FLOWER thinks of the silver business he goes right off and plays golf and kills the caddie. se HE QUESTION has arisen whether George Dewey is a Re- publican or a Demo- crat. For our part, we have no doubt of it. BOTH ENGLAND and Russia want the whip hand in Chi- na, but the emperor is quite convinced that the dowager empress has it. THEY TELL of an Arkansas man who swallowed a cop- per cent by mistake. We could have sworn that .that was the very cause of it. OF COURSE we can lose Shake- speare, as somebody suggests; but the hole he drops through will be so large that there will be no room for anybody on the outside of it. Mrs. JoHNson- wiilst robin’ 'S. ire Henry's chicken-coop.”” Doctor DEPEW was kissed by a Lenox girl for his success in auc- tioning off a toy ship. “Bring me a fleet of them,” says the doctor laconically. “I couldn't need a fleet more if I were the government of Spain. ‘THE KENTUCKY REGIMENT that had two daughters thereby got itself into such a tremendous quarrel that it must disband or die by duel to the last officer and private. It is a Kentucky feud, with women at the bottom of it, and no interested man survives that. a GREAT CONSOLATION, * Did yo" heah de news, Mrs. Jackson? Abe Lincoln wuz shot an’ killed las’ night Mrs. Jackson—" Ob, Mrs, Johnson! whad a consolation it mus’ be toe his po’ ole mudder toe know dat Abe got religion, wuz baptized, an’ j'ined de chu'ch, las’ Sunday.” A GREAT NATIONAL DANGER. THE ELECTION of Judge van Wyck would mean a tremendous effort by Tammany hall to get possession of the general government. Judge van Wyck might be the choice of Tammany for president. He says he voted for Bryan and is proud of it. Whether Bryan or van Wyck were the candidate the danger would be the same. THE SAME OLD FIGHT. BEAR IN MIND that the Democrats and nondescripts of every west- ern and southern state are openly for silver, and that those eastern Democratic conventions which have failed to indorse the Chicago platform have done so only after very hard fights. Next year and in nineteen hun- dred every Democratic flag will fly for free silver, and probably for Bryan, if not for Judge van Wyck. KING CROKER. T IS CURIOUS that of several Democrats who wanted to head the ticket in this state not one was found available, while the one selected accepts the danger at great personal sacrifice of choice and money. Give ‘one man the power that ought to belong to a convention and what a tyrant he becomes! And let_ no Democrat who wants office try to get it openly and like a man, but secretly and like a sneak TWO AMERICAN PRINCES. RINCE JOHN, son of President van Buren, was at home in any company. The boys liked him, the bar liked him; he was for- cible on the stump and the platform, and soci- ety met him with open palm. He is said to have been the only American who ever danced with Queen Victoria. PrincéRoose- velt is equally happy. with the exception that there has been no queen convenient for him to dance with. HOW TO MARRY. SARAH GRAND tells at great length how girls should pick out husbands, and warns them to beware especially of glib, agreeable scamps. She ought to be competent to give advice in these matters. She picked out one husband, and shortly after the mar- riage the two were sep- arated, But such ad- vice is always thrown away. Every girl knows the man she wants. herself, and she would have him if she knew in advance that the result would be the utmost misery. REVIVAL OF A SNAKE. ‘THE TERM “The scandalous abuse by the president of the power of appointment” finds its way in various shapes to a number of Demo- cratic platforms. ;Is it honestly believed that it can hurt the president or his party? Consider the consummate wisdom of the president in every move he has made, and the fact that the government of Spain was whipped within a hundred days, with all the glory and value that that brings to the United States. No; it will be found, as it was once before, that copper- headism doesn’t pay. ‘ comicbooks:dam
