# Judge Magazine Cartoon Analysis The central cartoon titled "NOT A LIE" depicts two figures in conversation, likely representing political opponents debating a contested claim. One says "Say, Bill, I've struck great luck" while the other responds with accusations: "Found a clanless sister," "Where is it?" and "Supportin' six breaches." This appears to satirize political mudslinging and character attacks common in late 19th/early 20th-century American politics. The exchange mocks how politicians manufacture or exaggerate scandals about opponents' families to discredit them, rather than engaging substantive debate. The surrounding editorial text reinforces this theme, criticizing press coverage of political disputes and emphasizing how libel accusations and personal attacks have become normalized political tactics that undermine serious democratic discourse.

Let us be just. [F HENRY GEORGE, humanitarian and thinker, might return he would have a large majority for anything he asked. There is enough of human nature in this town to give that tribute to genius and honesty. GENERAL MILES looks upon the military equipment of Europe as a pretty sure indication of war, It is a rational conclusion that that is what armies are for; otherwise what a waste of material great armies are. THE EDITOR who goes to prison for eight months for libeling Leopold of Belgium will know enough hereafter to.give his majesty credit for something worse than gambling. That is so contemptible a misdemeanor that Leopold is ashamed of it. [8 SAVING that Hosea Rockwell, silver Democrat of Elmira, is acro- batic enough to be for silver or gold or nothing, as occasion demands, the Buffalo News is unfair. Ik must admit that Hosea was never more than one of those things at any one time. i “Say, Bill, I've struck great luck.” THE WINNING SIDE. GENERAL BLANCO, starting for Cuba, expressed confidence in his ability to command immediate success. Weyler was always talking that way, and it has only just transpired that he meant success for the insurgents. THE CAUSE OF IT. PLATTISM, Rooseveltism, Rainesism, puritanism, have lost this city and this state to the Republicans. Personal liberty belongs to decent citizenship, and the arrest of innocent women in this town for being in the streets after nightfall is a crime in government which is not to be forgiven. We are governed too much, and the cry of reform has invited too many crimes against the tax-payer and the citizen. MR. DANA’S HATREDS. F MR. DANA carried his enmities over there he is likely to have trouble, His dislike of Beecher, Grant and Childs lasted long after those men died; and Mr. Cleveland may have something to say when he departs, if speech is permitted beyond the veil. Let us hope, however, that the dead understand each other better than the living, and that in consequence the celestial abode is empty of all yrossness and injustice. THE HARMLESSNESS OF LIBEL. R. PLATT and Mr. Croker have long memories, but the fact is that they have no particular use for them. If the charges of Henry George were untrue they ought to have put that man in the penitentiary. It seems strange that they can overlook libel so pronounced and persistent as that, and it is difficult to believe that their indiffer- ence was a result of innocence. But, as Mr. Timothy Campbell would say, what are a few epithets and libels among friends? A WEAK SYSTEM. THE QUESTION is asked by the Chicago 7imes-Herald, “IE it requires twelve jurors. to convict a rogue why should one juror be able to save him?” Such a question as that would be the ruin of any debating society. If properly discussed it would threaten the disruption of the jury system its very self, particularly as the system is hardly able to stand alone now. Let us not vex ourselves with discussion of these things: Let us keep up the grand old humbug and say nothing. Tite CHAINtESs, ‘SAFETY. UNFAIR. VERDICT of fifty-four thousand dollars, damages, in behalf of a young widow for breach of promise, has been rendered by an Illinois jury. That is so excessive as to be obviously unjust. A widow is too smart to be wholly deceived, and her feelings are fractured to ‘only half the extent of those of a totally unmarried woman who suffers in the same way. And an Illinois widow—good gracious! It would be gratifying to know how many times she has been a widow, and whether she is of the grass or the other kind, MUGWUMPS AND PARTISANS. THE TAIL isn't powerful enough to wag the dog or the clephant. Mugwumps above all others pray for the defeat of the Republican party; and the impertinence of their demand that that magnificent organization shall lower its flag and accept their or- ders is beyond patience. We never heard of a mugwump who refused office as a result of victories won by organizations; but that class must Not expect to boss the honest partisan as well as to profit from his meth- ods and his success. The grand old party of this town went down with its colors flying, and that was victory enough for one day, GIVE THANKS. E GETS THE BEST out of life who doesn’t criticise it too much. Let him take things as they come, thoughtless of the evil in them as far as may be and multiplying the blessings even if they come through tribulation. Let him not kick, but reflect that the world is managed for others as well as for himself. It’s an ill wind that bloys nobody good, and the right to personal prosperity to the sacritice of Others belongs to no man. It is good philosophy to draw sunbeams from misfortune—for otherwise what comfort-has any individual? It seems a hateful ortho- doxy to praise God for trouble, but it is better than to cry out against the east wind and howl against the universe. Perhaps things ought to be, but things are. Put up your face to the morning and think how its rosy light has shone through the ages over every battle-field and every sorrow. comicbooks.com ;
