266 age IT WAS HER WAY. RS. NEWED picked her out of half a dozen applicants. She had all the traits of a steady-going domestic. She was on the verge of elderly maidenhood, religiously un- beautiful, Susan by name, and cross-eyed. The young wife had been doing her own work for two weeks and was elated at her good fortune, while even hubby found it in his heart to rejoice. ‘The slips of the first week Susan excused by saying that she'd “do better when she got the run o' the place.” Mr. Newed, the late interregnum in mind, was patient ; and his choicer half was equally mum. One morning, however, she was tempted by the sight of Susan wash- ing a tub of clothes with about three dippers of water to suggest that the things might wash easier if they were wet. Susan was surprised at the young wife's sagacity and said she liked to be advised by older people. A little while after the mistress found her servant in a perfect puddle. Unable to repress a smile, she asked her if she had ever heard that wash- ers who splashed themselves got drunken husbands, Susan giggled softly, gazed around ambiguously with her crossed eyes, and began dabbling away furiously—a sign, possibly, that she refused to consider drunkenness a valid objection. From this time Susan fell into many little foibles which were a source of some uneasiness to her employers. At S meals two knives would be found at one a \ plate, a fork and spoon “OH, YOU'RE NOT SO WARM!" at the other, Occa- sionally the carving- knife would tower aloft from the spoon-holder. Cups and saucers of different sets and sizes added | variety to the table, and the dishes showed the ravages of time. The stove-lids also began to make t themselves heard and the tea-table was never the same length two meals in succession. Are Mrs. Newed, who was becoming a little diffident toward Susan, remonstrated mildly ;- but she replied with pathetic serenity, “I guess it’s my way.” When the stair - carpet was to be put down Susan asked where she would start. At the top, she was told. She began at the bottom, Her mistress reproved her for this breach of discipline, but Susan only sighed and said, “You are so provoking! I wonder sometimes how I put up with you.” “Why, Susan, is that the way to speak to your mistress ?” “Oh, well, I suppose it's my way,” and she smiled reassuringly. — After every tiff Susan took on a new accretion of sweetness and provocativeness. Her latest habit was, very trying, Everything was moved from its accus- tomed place and anything laid down carelessly might be given up for lost. When questioned | she had seen it but had forgotten where. The young couple were about to rebel when Susan glided in one evening with the news that her mother was sick and she must go home at once. Mrs, Newed, who feared she might change her mind if she showed any joy, hoped her mother was not seriously ill. “Oh, dear, no!" said Susan with a sniffle and a sly leer, “ she gets sick about this time every year. It’s a way she has.” . EDWARD CLAYTON SAVAGE. 3. —old chump ! A TURN IN AFFAIRS. 1. ‘Me uncle 's deaf asa ~ Runan’ holler in his ear.” Pom TRUER THAN SHE KNEW.
