In May, 1885, one of the proprietors of Jupce tendered the cottage at Mount McGregor to General Grant, in order that he might find the rest and seclusion necessary to the completion of his memoirs. The offer was grate- fully accepted. Here, beneath the shade of the mountain pines, the dying chieftain penned the final pages of the book that proved an immortal contri- bution to history.
