There has been a difficulty, so it is alleged by the chief importers of China and Japan teas in the United | States. in obtaining a tea that was absolutely pure and free {rom all artincial coloring. In fact, they lately Petitioned congress to impose a duty on all teas, as, according to their petition, this duty was absolutely necessary to effect an improvement in the quality of importations. This admission from this source is an important one to the tea-drinkers of America. ‘These gentlemen are perfectly well aware that the teas of Ceylon and India are pure, wholesome and uncolored, and that they are manufactured without contact with human hands (alter picking) entirely by the most ap- proved machinery, and theretore stand as 10 tot when compared with the cheap trash of China and Japan, which 18 made entirely by the hand labor of cooltes. These teas from Ceylon and India only re- Quire half the quantity, and if some of these importers (who to a certain exte aside theie vested money interests in China and Japan and be honest in the matter they would sell these ab- solutely pure Ceylon and India teas in preference to the other hand-rolled goods. In other words, perfect cleanliness should take the place ot the reverse. ‘To show that the above statements are truthful we give an extract of the scatimony before the congres- Gional committee.
