Speaking of the weather, quite a variety of phenomena have been observable lately in the theatrical belt. Here it is only early fall, with sunstrokes a recent memory, yet already there have been severe frosts at the Empire, the Fifth Avenue, Palmer's, and Daly's. On Monday, September second, when ** The City of Pleas: ure” was produced, New York was shaken by | an earthquake. The following evening, Mrs. James Brown Potter blazed forth in * Le Col- lier de la Keine” with such an effulgence of gowns and diamonds that the moon went into total eclipse until the show was over. age AT THE Mr. Richard Mansfield, our only actor-man- ager, is a species of Jekyll-Hyde personag ‘The Jekyll half of him is an admirable acto while the Hyde moiety is a bad manager, man- aging the actor as well as directing a. play- house curiously styled ‘The Garrick, after a| comedy character which Nat Goodwin some- times enacts. I regret to see that the bad Hyde frequently gets the upper hand of the good Jekyll, and plays mean tricks upon the latter and his theatre. It is well known that the good Jekyll desired to dedicate his stage to the young Persons of New York, and to present there only works of refined, poetic and moral sentiment— and the Mansfield repertory. But now, the bad manager Hyde comes forward and opens The Garrick with the Holland brothers in a hum ous (in the English sense) piece entitled “A Man with a Past,” recounting the farcical ad- ventures of a bogus Don Juan. I wonder if Weil, supposing that they do, and that The Garrick has a season of full houses overflowing into the Pompeiian foyer—even then, the effect of good actor Jekyll’s eventual appearance in his best rdles is liable to be queered at any mo- ment by Hyde's rushing out before the curtain and insisting upon making a speech. This is downright devilishness on Hyde's part.
