MARBURG BROS = BALTIMORE, MD. THE AMERICAN TOBACCO €O. Succe: AT THE Suadge “pay. Well, the season opens with a bang and a rush—like a bottle of champagne not sufficient- ly frappe. That Thursday evening of the first two big_premidres— “The Sporting Duchess” at the Academy of Music, a1 © Fleur-de-Lys at Palmer’s—was the record: break- er of the whole year for heat, hu- midity, and gen- eral cussedness of weather. But then, why should our astute theat- ical managers. in arranging dates, be governed by any mere me- teorological considerations, when they disre- gard with impunity such felatively important matters as public sentiment, local feeling, lit- erary integrity, taste, common sense, and’ the eternal fitness of things? In this, to be surg they are right—else they couldn't go ahead. Your prosperous manager is simply a hard- headed business man, It is a money risk, and not an wsthetic abstraction, that confronts him, and he must be on the safe side of the box: office every time. Some people say Mr, Augustin Daly is the great American manager, and I believe Mr. Daly himself has indorsed the statement, per Mr. Dorney, as being substantially correct. Of course it might be disputed, for argument's sake, by the great (I) AM Palmer, and by the imperious, imperial Charles Frohman, Esq. Mr. Palmer, as everybody knows, has done an immense lot for the American drama—and in- cidentally the American drama has done a little something for Mr. Palmer. Mr. Frohman con- trols the exclusive rights of production, in this country, of works by the most eminent English moralists and thinkers of the present age, in- cluding Jones, Smith, Oscar Wilde, and’ Sir Gus Harris, He has, moreover, contracted for new plays by all the contemporary dramatists in the world, with the exception of a few play- wrights of no importance residing in the United States, But, as I started out to observe, Mr. Augustin Daly is a great American manager— nay, more! lie is an author-manager, having made many successful adaptations from the German and from Shakespeare. a magnificent theatre in London, where he has revealed to the British many hitherto unsus- pected beauties of their national drama. At the same time he never fails to visit New York annually, giving us the best of his adaptations from the German and from Shakespeare. This he treats us to a grand surprise, in the form of “* Le Collier de la Reine.” ‘The piece, by the way, is French ; but Mr. Daly has had it all translated into English, except the title. It is about an actress who loses her diamonds ; and in it Mrs. James Brown Potter plays the part of Marie Antoinette, said to be founded upon the actual history of a young Austrian 187 Mr. Daly has | THEATRICAL ATTRACTIONS. mR’ Ss ‘th GRE asses oe Gate DOLLAR THEATRE. AS there are about fifty elaborately dressed person- ages in the cast, and over a dozen scenic tab- leaux, it would have been ruinous to put on the play unless for a long run ; so it was kept along at the Porte St. Martin for three months. It deserves an equal success in New York. It is against the law to bet on horse-races ; but the speculation in horse-plays goes on mer- rily. Look at "* The Sporting Duchess.” Some of the best thoroughbred acting I have seen is done by the equine stars in this good old Drury Lane concoction. Some men and women, also, including Agnes Booth, Alice Fischer, Cora Tanner, J. H. Stoddart, Frank Carlyle, Ratcliffe and William Harcourt, are also cast for minor parts ; but, obviously, they are "' not in it" with the four-legged players. Natural- ly, the horses are beginning to feel their histri- onic oats, and to develop the familiar idiosyn- crasies of favorite actors. For instance, I hear it rumored at the Academy stables that Clip. stone, the Derby winner, feels himself a big enough horse to disregard the stage manager's orders. Also, that a pretty little sorrel filly kicked because she couldn't have a dressing- stall all to herself, I may have a few more remarks to make about things in general, next week. PASsANT.
