What you’re looking at

This page contains several satirical cartoons and jokes typical of Judge's late 19th/early 20th-century humor: **"The Man Near the Door"**: A lengthy anecdote mocking the absurdity of urban rushing—a man desperately pushes to exit an elevator first, only to leisurely smoke a cigar afterward, wasting the time he frantically saved. It satirizes pointless competitive behavior. **"Powerful Argument"**: A women's suffrage debate joke. The speaker argues women shouldn't vote because "we didn't get small-pox or cholera" without female voters—sarcastically undermining anti-suffrage logic. **"A Born Stateswoman"**: Mocks married life by comparing a wife's argument-stopping technique to parliamentary "cloture rule" (legislative procedure limiting debate). **"Up in Sports, Not in History"**: Students confuse Andrew Jackson (historical figure, Battle of New Orleans) with boxer James J. Corbett, reflecting contemporary priorities. The cartoons use everyday situations and dialogue to satirize modern manners, women's rights debates, and cultural ignorance—typical Judge fare aimed at educated, urban readers.

318 club, deah boy ? THE MAN NEAR THE DOOR. THE man stood right in the doorway of the elevator-car and peered anxiously out as they _ passed each floor. When —4 it stopped to let some one S™ on, he still stood there; and instead of stepping back into the car to make more room he got a little to one side and let the man squeeze past him. As often as he was pushed back into the car a little by some one getting on who would not squeeze past him he worked his way to the front again. It seemed to be a matter of great importance to him to be near that entrance, and as the elevator ap- proached the lower floor he got his shoulder wedged in ahead of the man next to him so as to give himself a clear start when the bottom was reached. ‘There seemed to be no question but that he was in a great hurry, and when the iron-grated door was pushed back he made one last effort and succeeded in getting out ahead of the little feliow who had quietly worked up alongside of him in the elevator. It was with a rush that they went through the doorway and down the hallway to the entrance to the building. Then the man who had made such an effort to get out first stopped. He reached in his pocket, pulled out a cigar and lit it. He looked back at the elevators to see if there was any one coming out of them that he knew, saw no one, lounged out into the street, looked carelessly up and down it and then sauntered away.
