What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising disguised as editorial content**. The lead article features a testimonial from a U.S. Navy barber praising Williams' Shaving Soap for healing sunburned sailors' faces. This is a **product endorsement** using government employment as credibility. The remainder consists of **classified and display advertisements** for various products: Victor bicycles, Joseph Gillott's steel pens, hotel listings, the New York Central Railroad, Anheuser-Busch beer (prominently featured twice), Monarch bicycles, Calisaya La Rilla medicinal cordial, and Carl Upmann cigars. The small text snippets scattered throughout are **brief satirical observations** typical of Judge magazine—mocking government appointments, Spanish work customs, and literary trends—but these are incidental to the page's primary function as an advertising vehicle. The Anheuser-Busch ads notably reference the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, suggesting a contemporary date.

The Barber’s Story By J. W. HUTTON, U.S. Navy Yards, Washington, D.C. ‘* For the past four years I have been employed by the GOVERNMENT as BARBER in the UNITED STATES Navy YARDs. “A sailor's face is exposed to the hot, scorching sun most of the time, and when they came in to get shaved, many were sore—badly blistered—and ‘peeling.’ When I put on the lather their faces would smart and burn like fire, and they were in perfect torture until it was removed. I was using a cheap kind of Shaving Soap, procured in New York. I read and heard so much about WILLIAMs’ Shaving Soap being so very cooling and healing, I decided to try it. “That was the last I heard of smarting, sore faces. WILLIAMS’ Soap did heal. “The creamlike lather drew out the soreness, and the sailors soon learned to ask me to let it remain on the face longer than usual, that they might enjoy its cooling, comfort- ing effect. I consider it a most wonderful cure for Sunburn, Sores, Pimples, and every kind of irritation of the face.” 4 ‘There are bigger things in this government than the appointment or removal of fourth-class masters. ‘This is a first-class government.
