What you’re looking at
The central cartoon depicts three well-dressed men in top hats examining a small child, illustrating the section titled "TAKING CHANCES." The accompanying dialogue—"I'm in luck. I got five hundred last night on the ace o' hearts!" and "That's nothin'. A fren' o' mine cracked a jewelry only las' week an' got a thousand on a tray o' di'mons"—reveals these are gamblers boasting about illicit winnings from crime and betting. The satire targets how wealthy men rationalize illegal activities (gambling, theft) as acceptable entertainment. The child's presence suggests commentary on moral corruption or its effects on innocence. The page's text sections discuss Democratic Party infighting, women's suffrage in Arizona, and other contemporary political issues, but the cartoon is the primary visual satire.

FORCE DID NOT sweep the American flag from the merchant marine. If that had. been attempted it would have remained there. Our own stupidity did it, and the amazing thing is that this people should have been so indifferent to a humiliation whose rectification is received with such ac- clamation. Better late than never; and the American line will be safer and better with those colors flying. A NEW STAR. ‘THE JUDGE believes that Kate Jordan isa great writer, and if anybody doubts it let him read “A Rose of the Mire” in Lepprncott for March. It is worthy of Dickens, and in sureness of stroke and brevity of descrip- tive force Miss Jordan may be pronounced his superior. Of the several writers who have recently won popularity the JUDGE believes Kate Jordan is the most original and the very best. BEYOND OUR GEOGRAPHY. SEVERAL WRITERS and clergymen have recently given their views of hell, and, curiously enough, we know just as much about it as we did before. One writer, however, compromises matters by admitting that there is such a place and then insist- ing that it is one of positive enjoy- ment. Perhaps this is a fine place at which to rest from the discussion. Any dead man knows more about it, if he knows anything at all, than all the living world can know in all the years that are to come. TROUBLE, THE INTERNAL DISSEN- SIONS of the Democratic party of this state are active and unceasing and will presently pro- duce a bad rupture. Senator Hill, in a very bad state of temper, threat- ens everybody, including Richard Croker; and the question as to which is the party, the Cleveland men or the machine, is as danger- ous as the question regarding the make-up and the continuation of the machine itself. In point of fact there are five or six Democratic parties, not to mention Bill Brown, and an impending new birth threat- ens triplets or quartettes. UNCLE BEAURY. AT ONE TIME, according to the Atlanta Constitution, the men- tion of Beauregard's name brought tremor and terror to the, north and blanched its damask cheek. It did. It was about the period of the first Bull Run, when two armies were so frightened that they ran away from each other as fast as their legs could carry them, But we speedily got acquainted with Beaury, and found that he was not such a bad fellow after all. Indeed, the dear old chap tried to make us all rich at a cost to ourselves of only a few dollars apiece. His heart was capacious and his generosity boundless; and on the whole that is the history in brief of most of those southern terrors, who eat fire on the stage and are the best of fellows behind the scenes. A fre ine cracked a jewelry crib WOMAN’S PROGRESS. WOMAN SUFFRAGE will be legalized in Arizona territory. There are a great many ideas in the boundless west, and they are backed by courage and an honest contempt for the cowardice which sustains nothing that has not a precedent. Women jurors and women voters and women office-holders have ceased to be curiosities in the great world that is opening up out there; and when Miss Anthony considers them. and likewise the thousands of women and girls of the east who have the blessed privilege of earning their own living, she must look back to her fifty years of earnest work with peculiar satisfaction. She is a great and good woman, and whomsoever lifts a hand to her save in the way of kindness ought to begin to die. comicbooks.com
