Governor Flower, in the eye of the French duelist, must be the nerviest individual now ex- tant, inasmuch as he has called out the whole militia of the state of New York.—Minneap- olis Times. A Franklin undertaker was looking through a friend’s new house, and praised the arrange- ment of it till the owner's face shone like a full moon in harvest-time; but he knocked all the sunshine out of his friend's countenance, just as he was leaving, by the remark that the hall- way was not at ail convenient for carrying out a coffin.— Blizzard. Sometimes it pays a man to keep his wife fully posted in all Pidetaits of his business plans and needs. For example, it is stated that an Abilene (Kan.) man recently advertised that he would like to buy a second-hand lawn-mower, and to address “*X 1," post-office. He re- ceived one answer that struck him favorably, and after corresponding some time hunted the party up and found it to be his wife, who was trying to sell him their old one.—Exchange, JOSEPH GILLOTT'S STEEL PENS. STATEMENT OF DR. JOHN HERBERT CLAIBORNE, M.A, M.D, OF PETERSBURG, VA, Ex-President and Honcrary Fellow Medical Soctety of Vireinta, PETERSBURG, VA., SEPTEMBER 5, 1892. Dr. E. C. Laird, Buffalo Lithia Springs, Va.: My pear Doctor—I send by this mail a box of CALCULI, passed at various times within the last year by Hon. T. J. Jarratt, our former Mayor, whilst drinking the BUFFALO LITHIA WATER. They give him but little pain now when passing. I have never criti- cally examined the broken CALCULI, passed in such quantities from Mr. Jarratt's bladder; but am under the impression that the most of them were MAGNESIAN PHOSPHATES. There were specimens, however, which presented the appearance of OXYLATES, and, I remember, impressed me specially as being URJC ACID. I do not pretend to account for the mode of their solution by the BUFFALO LITHIA WATER. There is nothing in its analysis which would warrant such results; but THE RESULTS ARE THERE, and seeing is believing. I can only suppose that in Nature's Alembic there has been some subtle solvent evolved, too subtle to be caught by our coarse re-agents, which makes this wonder- ful disintegration. “There are many things in heaven and earth not dreamt of in our philosophy,” and his is a short creed who only believes what he can prove or explain. Faithfully yours, JOHN HERBERT CLAIBORNE.
