What you’re looking at

This page satirizes Irish Home Rule politics through an interview with Owen Dennis McManus, a Tipperary League figure. The central joke is an extended allegory: McManus tells a story about O'Halloran's pig—three men fighting over it, taking the dispute to court, where lawyers drag out proceedings with legal Latin terms (habeas corpus, certiorari) throughout winter. The judge finally orders the pig returned, but O'Halloran keeps it anyway. **The satire:** The pig represents Ireland itself. McManus's point—directed at squabbling Irish Home Rule leaders—is that while they litigate endlessly over who controls Ireland, someone (implicitly England or practical politicians) simply keeps it. The cartoon mocks both Irish factional fighting and the absurdity of legal processes that enrich lawyers while resolving nothing. The moral: stop quarreling or Ireland will be lost to those actually holding power.

JUDGE THE IRISH SITUATION. MR. HENNERY FLYNN of the JUDGE staff was sent to inter- view Mr. Owen Dennis McManus on the present unhappy division in the camp of the home-rulers of Ire- land. Mr. McManus is high actu- ary of the Tipperary league and often gets high in the councils of the party. It was after office-hours when our reporter called and found Mr. McManus in his pleasant home on One hundred and fifty-eighth street, and he was. solacing his nervous system with a pipe. He expressed himself as willing to be interviewed. To the question, “What do you advise as to the present unhappy division in the home-rule party 2” he responded : “Did yez iver hear av O'Halloran’s pig?” We informed him that the legend had never been imparted to us, and he spoke substantially as follows : “In Ballydrag in O'Connell's time the counthry was broke up to a degree, an’ movable property like hins an’ pigs was scatthered abroad an’ loiable at toimes to be missin’ altogither..
