What you’re looking at

This page is primarily **advertising and editorials**, not political cartoons. The visible advertisements include Scott's Emulsion (cough remedy), fur capes, detectives-for-hire, and a Daylight Lamp. There is also a portrait of W.L. Douglas promoting his shoes. The text contains brief humorous anecdotes and editorial notes rather than satirical cartoons. One joke mocks women's fashion competitiveness (wanting bonnets more stylish than neighbors' rather than merely new). Another comments on a "winter-girl" who departed by sea. A third jokes about a minister asking grace before meals. There's also an editorial promoting the American Institute Fair at Third Avenue and 64th Street (held October-November), describing its mechanical inventions and reasonable admission price. This appears to be a typical page from Judge magazine's late 19th or early 20th-century format: mostly commercial advertisements interspersed with light humor and informational content rather than sharp political satire.

AMERICAN INSTITUTE PAIR. By all odds the most interesting fair of every season is that of the American institute, ‘hird avenue and Sixty-fourth street, which is held this year from October 1 to November 29. The display of mechanicat inven- tions is always superb, and the other departments are not less interesting and complete. One might attend for days and nights and still find that he had not half reached the limits of the exhibition. The price of ad- mission is so small that there is no one too to give the fair his patronage ; and the benefits of it are limit- | tess, both as a matter of enjoyment and practical profit. Go and see the best fair this country ever had. 1 am not broken-hearted, Although she crossed the sea. I saw her off; I shed no tears; ‘My winter-girl was she. —Chicago Tribune. A PROFITABLE BUSINESS. In every locality there is an opening for a live man to | make money by giving exhibitions with a magic lantern or a stereopticon to Sunday-schools, academies, public audiences, lodges, societies, families, etc. The illus- trated lecture business, when conducted intelligently and energetically, yields a good return for the invest ment, attracting ‘first-class audiences, being easy of management and demanding only a moderate capital. We take pleasure in directing all desiring such an outfit to the old-established house of McAllister, 49 Nassau street, New York, who is the largest manufacturer and dealer in this class of goods either in the United States or Europe. His apparatus is all of the most recent and improved construction, and he carries a stock of about one hundred thousand finely executed photographic glass slides, from which selections can be made to illustrate all subjects of popular interest. For further informa- tion we refer our readers to his handsomely illustrated catalogue of two hundred and eight pages, which he forwards free on application. “Will you say grace?" said the editor, As the minister took his seat ; And the latter cried, as the food he “Lord, give us something to eat —Atlanta Constitution. ‘The Sohmer pianos are pronounced superior to all others by leading artists. “They tell me Sergeant Grim is occupying one of your cottages on the square.
