What you’re looking at

This page is primarily **advertisements and brief satirical quips**, not political cartoons requiring historical context. The substantive content includes: **Satirical items:** - A jab at New York City corruption: boodlers (corrupt politicians) needn't leave the city to "steal away" - Wordplay mocking Cleveland's "hollow phrases" - A "city girl" joke: Angela Sillibilly mistakes cows for something else and asks about removing "jelly from their feet" (likely udders)—satirizing urban ignorance of rural life - A dandy character ("Chelly") joking about a barber suing him over unpaid shaving bills **The remainder is advertising** for products (typewriters, bicycles, tea, soap, candy, life insurance) and railroad vacation packages. No specific identifiable political figures are caricatured. The page reflects *general* era concerns: urban corruption, class differences between city and country, and consumer goods marketing typical of late 19th-century American magazines.

RY, ‘A Cartoon That Takes the Palm for Sear ‘The East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia railway just issued a remarkable cartoon in the interest o| an system. It is the work of the world-famous cartoonist, Thomas Nast. It represents Mr. B, W. Wrenn, the general passenger agent, standing on a rostrum, with arm extended, expostulating upon the advantages of the system, of which he is one of the most efficient execu- tive officers. A map is displayed—a marvel of accurate and clear reduction—showing the combination of lines that connect New York, Cincinnati, Memphis, New Orleans and St. Augustine. The audience in the fore- ground listening to Mr. Wrenn, is made up of persons of all the nations of the earth. ‘Incidental to the gen- eral sketch are representatives, actual and symbolic, of the varied character and wondrous resources of the country through which the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia railway runs, The spirit of southern progress enlivens the sketch, and the confraternity of the sections eloquently suggested. Mr. Wrenn is entitled to the lit of having brilliantly developed a novel idea in railroad advertisement, and Mr. Nast appears in it at his very best.—Aemphis Appeal, May 25, 1890.
