It deals mainly with the college career of three young men of the ‘wine, women, and song” style, and the reader is treated to a recital of the follies and question able pleasures which are indulged in by a certain limited class of college students. The ‘* Faithful Achates” of the story is an aimless and erratic fellow who discharges a debt of gratitude by purposely receiving an assassin’s stab which he knew was intended to take the life of his friend.— Washington (D. C) Public Opinion. This story differs materially from his “Woman of Sorek" in that it is less philosophical, or, as some might say, not so stilted, and shows that the author is gifted with that great essential in literature, diversification. “The Faithful Achates” opens with a thrilling incident on the western prairie, but the book is chiefly devoted to college life. It is made quite interesting by the in- troduction of lively incidents, and it contains much fine writing. Mr, Gould is a good descriptive writer, as was noticed in his “Woman of Sorek,” and he delineates human nature with masterly effect. The success he ax moet\with in these’ two efleres atoald encourage him to continue. The book can be had at any of the book- stores.—A lbany (N. Y.) Press and Knickerbocker. Most of the tale is in a college town, and of course would be interesting to Schenectadians. Mr. Gould has, by ‘A Woman of Sorek,” and ‘The Faithful Achates,” proven himself to be a writer of the highest. He has no specialty. His descriptive scenes are just as fascinating as his dialogues and analysis. Mr. Gould's latest effort can be read with both pleasure and profit. — Schenectady (N. Y.) Union, “The Faithful Achates” is the title of Anthony Gould's new novel, which has been published by the Judge company. Like Mr. Gould's first effort, **A Woman of Sorek,” it is in narrative form, and is'a tale relating to college life in so far as most of its characters and scenes are found at an eastern seat of learning. There is, however, an atmosphere of breezy and uncon- ventional western life incorporated into its pages, which provides a suitable contrast. Mr. Gould is a good de- scriptive writer and he delineates human nature with masterly effect. The book can be had at any of the book-stores.— Schenectady (N. Y.) Star. “1 don't think Jones has been indulging t20 much,” said his kindly believing spouse ; ‘* but still I thought it rather odd of him that he should wrench the knocker off the front-door and bring it up to me as I sat in bed, saying that he'd gathered another rose for me-out of the garden; poor dear simple boy! He's just as loving and sentimental as ever he was."— Troy Press, POPULAR THEATRES. NEW YORK CITY. CADEMY-—1. cht. ak aa ame nie re it. Mat. 2.
