What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertising**, dominated by commercial products (insurance, typewriters, shoes, wine). The main satirical content is "The Revised Speller," a story satirizing excessive legal complexity. The narrative concerns an old man trying to remove a boy from an apple tree. What should be simple becomes absurdly complicated when lawyers get involved. The boy makes trivial claims ("Naked Possession," "Title by Occupancy") while the old man's lawyer multiplies baseless claims (Riparian Owner, Freeholder, etc.). The case gets repeatedly delayed, adjourned, reversed, and remanded—never resolved. **The satire targets**: the legal profession's tendency to unnecessarily complicate straightforward disputes, accumulate fees through endless procedural delays, and obscure simple facts under mountains of technical jargon. It's social criticism dressed as humorous fable—suggesting American law had become more about lawyers' profit than justice.

An Old Man found a Rude Boy up one of his apple- trees, and desired the young marauder to come down, speaking to him with pleasant words which are sweeter also than the honey-comb. ‘I prefer to remain in the Band-wagon,” replied the Boy, who held the Ace. The Old Man then threatened him with personal violence, but the young scapegrace told him to go to it was written in the Spelling-book, * The Old Man, whose patience was soon gone, ‘I will visit you with the extreme penalty of the Law.” Whereupon the saucebox tauntingly told him to go ahead and draw his bill, and he would soon see how much meat there was on a woodchuck in December. The Old Man, nothing loath, at once engaged the services of an Able and Learned’ Lawyer, who was also a Jurist, and was distinguished in the columns of the local press for his matchless Forensic Eloquence; while on his part the Rude Boy, by pledging a portion of the fruit of the Tree which he occupi Pure-minded and’ Honorable Counselor, whose fair fame as an Attorney and spotless reputation as a 1 minded Advocate had never been called into que: save by those who had dealings with him, ‘Th Man, who was Rightful Owner and was possessed of the Tree’ by Descen*, Purchase, Escheat, Alienation, and Forfeiture, had his claim strengthened by his Lawyer, who put in additional claims as Riparian Owner, Free= holder, Tenant by Courtesy and Right of Discovery. Jn re the Defendant, the Rude Boy, merely put in’a claim of Naked Possession and claimed Title by Occu- ncy. The Old Man went for him on writs of Ouster, Trespass, Waste, and Subtraction, to which the R. BY replied by charging Disturbance of Tenure. ‘The case was called and put off, ahd set down and adjourned ; it was referred to the Master to take Proof ; it was Post- poned, decided, and carried up ; it was reversed and re- manded reinstate, and withdrawn with leave to amend ; it was argued in Chambers and surcharged for rejoinder, and | was just on the point of being rebutted for demurrer in Trover with misprision of alimony when the Old Man died, without issue, leaving the Rude Boy in possession, His ‘own Attorney, however, requested him to come down, to which the Boy replied that he had learned a little law himself by this time; whereupon his Advo- cate, reminding him that ‘‘a little learning was a dan gerous thing,” took a large-sized Rock of irregular shape from his pocket, knocked the Boy clear out of the orchard at the first shot, and assumed Vossession by Villainage. ‘* My name ‘is Dennis,” cried the Dying Boy; “but I wonder why the Old Man didn’t do that?" ** Because,” replied the High-minded Advocate, “he had a chump of a Lawyer who didn’t know how to play the winning cards when he held them.” So saying he took off all his client's clothes, examined his teeth to sce if they were filled, and sold the Cadaver to a medical student, with the right of reversion of the bones to him- self after the student got through with him, Thus do we see that it is easy enough to make an honest living at the practice of the theory of law, if you only know how to put the kink in the lariat.—Brooklvn Eagle, Sohmer & Co., the great piano-makers, furnish every variety of instruments—square, upright, and grand— and are constantly striving to meet every demand, Their success has been phenomenal. TWO VIEWS OF IT. By reading these verses right along, as printed, you get one view; by reading the lines alternately, in the order 1, 3, 2, 4, you will get the other view : ‘The man must lead a happy life Who js directed by his wife; Who's freed from matrimonial chains Is sure to suffer from his pains. Adam of old could find no peace Until he saw a woman's face ; When Eve was given for a mate, Adam was in a happy state, In all the females" hearts appear ‘Truth, darling of a heart sincere ; Hypocrisy, deceit, and pride Ne‘er known in woman to reside, What tongue is able to unfold ‘The worth in woman we behold? The falsehood that in woman dwell Is almost imperceptible. Fooled be the foolish man, I sa Who will not yield to woman's sway ; Who changes from his singlen Is sure of perfect blessedness, “Were you at the party last No; my wife went.
