What you’re looking at
This page from Judge magazine contains satirical pieces about American life circa the 1880s-90s. The main feature profiles **John H. Fritchey, Mayor of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania**—a physician who runs the city as a sideline to his medical practice. The satire mocks his dual role and the difficulty the Judge reporter had locating this obscure Pennsylvania town. The accompanying illustrations show Harrisburg citizens and social scenes. Secondary pieces include: **"An Amendment"**: A joke about Chicago being "divorce-ified" rather than diversified, satirizing the city's high divorce rate. **"Pigs All In"**: A humorous pitch for a bank safe with compartments for locking up all employees—the cashier, bookkeeper, teller, and president—suggesting widespread distrust of bank staff and embezzlement concerns. **"No Fool"**: A brief joke about smoke and hair coloring. The humor reflects period anxieties about municipal governance, urban vices, and financial dishonesty.

JUDGE MEN WE HAVE MET. JOUN H. FRITCH MAYOR OF HARRISBURG, PA, wres ZN THE JUDGE historian packed his grip and started out to find Harrisburg, Pa., and interview its mayor, he had a general idea that the city lay to the w ward # New York somewhere, and he bought a ticket for Titusville. On his arrival there he was told that no such town existed in the state, but that if he would make in- quiries down through Red Bank, Tyrone, Lock Haven, and Sunbury, he might get some information bearing on the possibility of his advisers being mistaken. He took this trip, and in making a short cut from Linglestown down to Greason stumbled right into Harrisburg—as the boys used to say, “unsight, unseen.” When he had found Mayor Fritchey, however, all was forgiven; and as much as it is possible to do so in Harrisburg he felt thoroughly at home, The chief magistrate simply carries on the mayor business as an annex to his doctoring trade, he being one of the most successful physicians in the city, and the “ M.D.” after his name answers for an abbreviation of both his callings. He is thirty- one years old, of rugged habit, good physique, and makes as good a mayor as a Democrat can make. When he defeated Samuel Fleming, the Republican candidate, the American eagle, instead of hiding its head, customary on such occas: merely bowed, and expressed its gratification that the matter was no worse and that the soup was so shallow. Dr. Fritchey is a bachelor, fir class shot, and a proi member of a local cav: ganization known ernor’s Troop. He calls it out on every possible occasion, and is very fond of introducing it to the casual visitor. The name of the force the 40,000 inhat arrisburg with a kid-gloved iron hand.
