Mystery League debuted in 1933 as a pulp magazine devoted to detective and crime fiction. This first issue's cover features three figures in period costume silhouetted within a large puzzle-piece frame outlined in red—a visual metaphor for the mysteries contained within. The bold geometric typography and 25-cent price point were standard for pulp magazines of the era, which sold thousands of copies weekly through newsstands and drugstores. Edited by Ellery Queen (a pen name for the collaborative writing team Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee), Mystery League competed alongside dozens of similar titles that introduced readers to hardboiled detectives, locked-room puzzles, and crime narratives—genres that would directly influence the comic book medium emerging in the mid-1930s.
