This inaugural issue under editor Ellery Queen contains "Drury Lane's Last Case" by Barnaby Ross (86,431 words), featuring the protagonist Drury Lane investigating an international mystery involving a "secret worth millions" that corrupts honest men. The issue also includes Dashiell Hammett's short story "Nightshade," Dorothy L. Sayers's "Suspicion" (about Mr. Mummery and a Scotland Yard hunt for an arsenic poisoner among London's suburbs), and Ellery Queen's own "The Glass-Domed Clock," describing a Fifth Avenue curio dealer's murder with clues including an amethyst, Russian ex-Duke, poker game, loving cup, birthday cards, and the titular clock. Additional content features John Marvell's story introducing Otto Burlingame, a con artist; J. C. Cannell's revelations of Houdini's magic secrets; a puzzle department; and Ellery Queen's editorial defending quality fiction over name recognition.
Each page has its own page — the cartoon, who’s in it, and what the satire means.
