Los Budokas Asesinos (The Assassin Budokas), by Lou Carrigan, is a crime-action pulp narrative set in New York City. The story opens with the brutal beating death of a prostitute named Katy in a Chinatown alley by three assailants wielding martial arts weapons—chains, nunchaku, and spiked brass knuckles—one of whom appears to be of Asian descent. A witness escapes and alerts authorities. News of the crime reaches Rock Forrest, a protagonist who watches a police sketch of one suspect on television. Recognizing the resemblance to someone he knows—Peter Brodine, apparently a martial artist training at a dojo run by someone named Yamagami—Forrest becomes concerned that his acquaintance may be implicated. He contacts Yamagami by phone to warn him and requests he relay a message to Brodine while cautioning discretion regarding police involvement. Forrest then attempts unsuccessfully to reach Brodine directly before resolving to investigate further.
